The season opener was a marquee matchup and a Super Bowl rematch, where the Seattle Seahawks escaped with a 13-10 win over the New England Patriots.

They sealed the win with a Josh Jobe interception in the Seattle end zone with 26 seconds left on the clock.

Bad Fourth Quarter for Runner-Up MVP

Drake Maye was the runner-up for MVP last season, leading the Pats to their Super Bowl run. However, in the season opener, he put up a stinker with three fourth-quarter interceptions.

His first two interceptions led to 10 Seahawks points. Maye had a chance to redeem himself, leading New England down the field late in the game and getting them to the Seattle 16-yard line, which was easily in field goal range to tie the game and, likely, send it to overtime. However, on 3rd and 5, Maye vastly underthrew Mack Hillons, and Jobe undercut him to get the pick and keep his feet in bounds to, basically, end the game.

Maye said his performance was unacceptable, and that sums it up. In the loss, he became only the second QB to have three picks in the fourth quarter of a season opener in the last quarter century. In the game, he was 23-for-33 for 178 yards, a TD, and the three INTs.

Darnold Goes Down Early

While the Seahawks got the win, they had sloppy play, were ineffective until the fourth quarter on the offensive side of the ball, and starting QB Sam Darnold left the game with a hip injury suffered in the first series. Veteran backup Drew Lock, who was 16-for-22 for 178 yards with a TD, came in and made some big plays in the fourth quarter.

Darnold is scheduled for an MRI after a CT scan that was encouraging but inconclusive.

Betway is one of the best Canadian sportsbooks, and they have the Seahawks tied with the Buffalo Bills at +1000 for the second-best odds to win the Super Bowl.

At Least the Defences Played Well

Neither offence got it going in the less-than-burning season-opener, but both teams played well on defence. The Pats were held to 277 yards and 5-for-16 on third down, while the Seahawks were held to 285 yards, going 2-for-11 on third down.

What’s Up Next

The defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks have a good chance to go 2-0 on the road against the Arizona Cardinals in their next game. However, the Pats have another tough game at home against Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
