World Cup Hangover Continues for Whitecaps with Leagues Cup Loss

The World Cup hangover continues for the Vancouver Whitecaps with their loss in the first match of the 2026 Leagues Cup. They lost 1-0 to Mexican side Atlante FC at BC Place, and since the World Cup break, the club has two losses and two draws in four matches.

The Whitecaps are now tied atop the Western Conference with LAFC, who they played to a 1-1 draw in the previous match. While Vancouver is enjoying a solid season, there have been chinks in the armor as of late, and they even dropped to third in the most recent ESPN MLS Power Rankings after owning the top spot in the previous edition.

Whitecaps Handed Another Clean Sheet in Loss to Atlante

In the 1-0 loss to Atlante, it was the Whitecaps' second match in their last three in which they failed to score.

They lost to Atlante despite dominating possession 69% to 31%, with eight corner kicks while conceding only two. Vancouver had fewer shots on goal (four to five) and could not crack the Atlante defense, which packed that area of the pitch after taking a 1-0 lead late in the first half.

The Whitecaps came out more aggressively in the second half but still could not find the back of the net. German star Thomas Müller, who ranks third on the team with five goals, made his Leagues Cup debut coming in as a substitute in the 64th minute but could not score after a goal in the previous match to save the 1-1 draw against LAFC.

The Caps' next Leagues Cup match is at home against FC Juárez.

Up and Down for the Whitecaps

The Whitecaps have scored the most goals and conceded the least in the Western Conference. After a 4-3 loss to Cincinnati FC in the first match after the World Cup break, the Caps have only conceded two goals in their last three matches but have only tallied one.

Other Issues for the Squad

Sebastian Berhalter, who played for the U.S. in the World Cup and ranks second on Vancouver with six goals, recently transferred to England second-tier club Middlesbrough FC.

The Vancouver players are unhappy with the new grass installed at BC Place after the World Cup, which is thicker and much slower. That has shown in the last couple of matches, where the attack has looked out of sync even though they dominated the time of possession in both.
