Whitecaps Look to Rebound after Tough 3-1 Loss to St. Louis City SC

The Whitecaps are at home to face the LA Galaxy on Wednesday night and look to bounce back after a bad 3-1 home loss to St. Louis City SC.

Good Start, Bad Finish

In the loss to St. Louis City SC, Vancouver got off to a great start with Emmanuel Sabbi scoring for the home team only two minutes after the opening whistle. Then, after the Whitecaps played one of the worst first halves of the season, giving up three unanswered goals.

The second half was a scoreless draw, and Vancouver limped off the field with the 3-1 loss. They had won their previous two matches by a combined score of 8-0 and had conceded only one goal in the four matches before the loss. In the St. Louis City SC match, they lost the time-of-possession battle (53% to 47%) and were doubled-up on shots on goal (6-3).

Vancouver Should Pick Up Some Points

The Whitecaps are still in first place in the Western Conference, three points clear of the Houston Dynamo, who played to a scoreless draw in their last match.

The club has a good chance of picking up six points in their next two matches. They play both at home: the LA Galaxy, 10th in the West, and Austin FC, second-to-last in the conference.

Sports Interaction Sportsbook has the Whitecaps as massive moneyline favorites in the LA Galaxy match, at -425, the Galaxy at +700, and a draw at +500. These sides played to a 1-1 draw earlier this season in La La Land.

Inconsistency a Little Concerning

While the Whitecaps have moved past their World Cup hangover, they have remained inconsistent, which is concerning. First, they lost to Houston at home, 1-0, in a battle between the top two teams in the West. Then they won two clean-sheet wins, including a 5-0 thrashing of FC Dallas, who are fourth in the West. Then, they lost to St. Louis, who are fifth in the conference, and two of the three losses were at home.

Still, Vancouver are still atop the West, second in the ESPN MLS Power Rankings, and their schedule for the remaining four matches this month is far from tough.
