Vancouver Whitecaps’ Woes Continue with Another Leagues Cup Loss

Vancouver Whitecaps FC suffered another defeat on Tuesday, losing on penalties to Mexican team Tigres UANL in the 2026 Leagues Cup.

Despite drawing the game in normal time, the Caps lost on penalties to exit the competition with zero points. The Mexicans, on the other hand, secured their third consecutive shootout win in the Leagues Cup.

More Misery for Vancouver

Vancouver is currently facing a challenging period, as the penalty shootout loss in Nuevo Leon has extended their winless streak to seven league and cup games.

The Caps have lost four and tied three of seven, with the last win coming in the Canadian Championship in early July.

Despite the woes, the Blue-and-White sit proudly at the top of the Western Conference table in MLS.

That said, Jesper Sorensen’s men are winless in three MLS matches, having lost to FC Cincinnati and drawn with Minnesota United and Los Angeles FC.

Caps Desperate to Bounce Back

Vancouver was already eliminated from the Leagues Cup when they arrived at the Estadio Universitario de la UANL, but Sorensen’s troops were looking to restore some pride.

After back-to-back home losses to Atlante and Juarez FC, the performance in Nuevo Leon was certainly better. The Canadians fell behind in the 19th minute, with Emmanuel Sabbi levelling late on.

The Mexican outfit had two players sent off at the death, but it was too late for the Caps to capitalize. The home team went on to win 5-4 on penalties.

After a dreadful Leagues Cup campaign, Vancouver returns to MLS action this weekend. The Western Conference leader has won just one of its previous five MLS fixtures.

On Sunday, Sorensen takes his side to Lumen Field to face Seattle Sounders FC. The Caps have yet to win since returning to action from the 2026 FIFA World Cup break, but can the Canadians leave Seattle with a huge three points?
