Vancouver Whitecaps FC Suffers Shock Defeat in Leagues Cup Opener

Vancouver Whitecaps FC was stunned by Leagues Cup debutants Atlante on Tuesday night.

The Caps were the overwhelming favourites to start the competition with a win, but Jesper Sorensen’s side fell to a shock defeat to the Mexicans at BC Place.

Disappointing Night for the Caps

Vancouver went into its opening Leagues Cup game full of confidence, as the Blue-and-White currently leads the way in the MLS Western Conference table.

However, Sorensen’s troops struggled to get going against the Liga MX side, and the Iron Colts left Canada with a precious three points in their first-ever Leagues Cup match.

In-form Jhojan Julio struck the only goal of the game in the 40th minute to give Miguel Herrera’s team a memorable victory in Vancouver. Julio is in fine form, also scoring the winner in last weekend’s league win at Cruz Azul.

The Caps are having a fine season but are now winless in five league and cup fixtures. The last win came in a Canadian Championship game in early July.

Vancouver Looking to Bounce Back Against Juarez

After losing its opening Leagues Cup fixture, Vancouver has work to do in this Friday’s second game against Juarez. No less than three points will do for the Canadians at BC Place.

Sorensen’s boys could also do with a win in MLS. Since returning from the 2026 FIFA World Cup break, Vancouver is winless in three league fixtures. The team lost 4-3 at FC Cincinnati before back-to-back ties with Minnesota United and Los Angeles FC.

Once the first batch of Leagues Cup fixtures are done and dusted, Vancouver returns to MLS action with a tough trip to Lumen Field to face Seattle Sounders FC.

The Western Conference leader is looking for its first MLS victory since a 4-2 success at FC San Diego in May. Can the Canadians put their stuttering form to bed and secure a much-needed three points in Seattle?
