Vancouver Whitecaps Extend Lead in West Over Houston Dynamo

Only three matches ago, Houston beat Vancouver to take the lead in the Western Conference. However, the Whitecaps are back atop the conference with two wins in their last two matches, while Houston has played to a draw and a loss in their last two.

Vancouver are now four points clear of Houston in the West.

Maybe not as Impressive, but Another Clean Sheet Nonetheless 

In their last match, the Whitecaps were on the road and beat Sporting Kansas City 3-0.

While not as impressive as their previous match, a 5-0 beatdown on FC Dallas, they secured another clean-sheet win. The win over Dallas was against a team in fifth place in the Western Conference and likely playoff-bound, while the win over Kansas City was against a club in the basement of the West.

Dominating the Doormat 

While facing the conference cellar dwellers in their last match, Vancouver were on the road and didn't give up a single shot on goal to Sporting Kansas City. Thomas Müller scored on a penalty for his third goal in five matches, Brian White scored on a back-heel finish from six yards out, and Rayan Elloumis put the finishing touches on with a goal in the 90th minute.

Keeper Yohei Takaoka recorded his 10th clean sheet this season and ranks second in the MLS in that category with LAFC’s Hugo Lloris with 11.

The World Cup Hangover is Over 

The Whitecaps have won two in a row and three of their last four matches after going winless in six matches, including 0-3 in the Leagues Cup, after the World Cup break. The club have conceded only one goal in its last four matches.

Vancouver play four of their five September matches at home, and the schedule for the month is not a hard one. They are next at home to face St. Louis CITY SC, who sit sixth in the West, and the next three matches are against teams in the bottom six of the conference.
