Toronto’s Playoff Ambitions Dealt a Huge Blow After Defeat in Ohio

Toronto FC was on the wrong end of a six-goal thriller with Columbus Crew last night, losing 4-2 at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field in Ohio.
With New York Red Bulls also winning, the Reds have slipped three points behind the final playoff spot in the MLS Eastern Conference table.
Damaging Defeat in Columbus
Toronto’s playoff bid was back on track after two wins and a draw from three. Having beaten Canadian rivals CF Montreal and drawn 3-3 with Orlando City SC, Robin Fraser’s men secured a crucial 2-0 win at the home of the Red Bulls last weekend.
Toronto was level on points with New York RB and a point above Columbus going into this round of MLS games.
However, it was a tough match in Ohio yesterday, with the home team racing into a four-goal lead before the hour mark. Goals from Daniel Salloi and Josh Sargent reduced the deficit, but Crew held on for a 4-2 win and a massive three points.
The defeat ended a three-game unbeaten run but was Toronto’s 11th MLS loss of the season.
Playoffs Still Within Reach for Reds
The loss in Ohio was no doubt a huge setback, but Toronto still has every chance of claiming a top-nine spot. The Red Bulls sit ninth, with the Reds just three points back in 11th.
Toronto has three regular-season games left to save its skin, with two of those away from home. On Wednesday night, Fraser’s troops welcome DC United to BMO Field.
The Canadians then end their campaign with back-to-back trips to Atlanta United and Philadelphia Union.
There is still a lot to play for in the Eastern Conference as only six points separate Orlando in seventh to Toronto in ninth.
Fraser’s boys have given themselves a mountain to climb, but can they end the regular season on a high and seal a top-nine berth?
