Robin Fraser Lives to Fight Another Day After New York Stalemate

Although Toronto FC’s winless run in MLS extended to 12 games, the Canadians left Yankee Stadium with a point on Friday night.

It was not pretty, but the 1-1 tie against New York City FC could signal a step in the right direction for Robin Fraser’s men.

Toronto went into the game against New York in the Bronx as the underdog, having not won a game in MLS since April.

The fans were fearing the worst when Nicolas Fernandez scored for the host from the penalty spot after just eight minutes. However, the away team stayed in the game and levelled before half time.

After some good work from Josh Sargent and Daniel Salloi, the ball bounced to Djordje Mihailovic from the goalkeeper, and the former Colorado Rapids man bundled the ball home.

A point on the road is always a positive result, and Yankee Stadium in the Bronx is never an easy place to visit.

Winless Streak Extends to 12

The away draw may signal progress, but Toronto's winless streak in MLS has now reached 12 games. The Canadians have not won since coming from two goals down to beat Colorado 3-2 at home on April 4th.

Since then, Fraser’s side have tied seven and lost five of 12 MLS matches. The pressure has built on the boss, with many fans turning on the 59-year-old.

Toronto finds itself languishing in 12th spot in the Eastern Conference standings on 17 points. The Reds have won just three of 18 MLS games in the 2026 season.

As for New York, the point leaves them in fifth place in the Eastern table. The Pigeons have picked up seven wins and suffered just one loss in seven.

After six successive away games, Toronto is finally back on home soil in the next one, facing New England Revolution at BMO Field on August 15th.
