LAFC’s Shaffelburg the Unlikely Hero for Canada

Canada’s rise under Jesse Marsch continued over the weekend as the Reds picked up a 2-0 win over Peru.
Los Angeles FC’s Jacob Shaffelburg was Canada’s unlikely hero in Montreal, netting both goals in the comfortable home victory.
Canada Continues to Rise
We are well and truly in the golden era of Canadian soccer right now, as Marsch’s men continued their fine 2026 FIFA World Cup form with another win at the weekend.
Following on from their hard-fought 1-0 triumph against Chile, Canada cruised to a friendly win over Peru at the Saputo Stadium on Saturday.
Los Angeles midfielder Shaffelburg stole the show, scoring both goals in the routine 2-0 success. The 26-year-old headed in the opening goal in the 19th minute before doubling his nation’s advantage with a smart finish ten minutes before half-time.
Shaffelburg was in fine scoring form for his country, but the midfielder has yet to find the net for LAFC in MLS this season. His last club goal came in a 5-2 loss to Inter Miami while playing for Nashville SC almost a year ago.
A Trip to Minnesota Up Next
Shaffelburg and his Canadian teammates travel to Minnesota next for a mouth-watering friendly against rival USA. The fixture at Allianz Field in Saint Paul will take place this Tuesday and will close out the international window.
Canada has been in fine form since Marsch’s arrival, reaching the World Cup quarter-finals. They would love to keep the momentum going with a midweek win in Minnesota.
The Canadians head to the States having won three of their last four international matches. Their last defeat was against Morocco in the World Cup Round of 16.
The United States has also been in good form since the World Cup, winning all three. Last time out, the Stars and Stripes beat Mexico 3-0 in Arizona.
Tuesday’s game will be another stern test for this evolving Canadian side, but can the Reds return home with a positive result?
