Can CF Montreal Build on Cup Success with a Much-Needed MLS Win?

CF Montreal is in the Canadian Championship final after beating rivals Vancouver Whitecaps in a two-legged semi.

There is no rest for the wicked, though, as Impact is back in MLS action this weekend, facing Columbus Crew at Saputo Stadium.

Cup Victory Eases MLS Woes

Montreal picked up a 3-2 aggregate victory over Vancouver in midweek to secure a spot in the Canadian Championship final. Impact will now take on Canadian Premier League side Forge FC in the final in Quebec.

Prince Owusu was the hero for Philippe Eullaffroy’s side in midweek, scoring a first-half brace in the 2-1 win. Montreal will be competing in its first Canadian Championship final since losing to the Whitecaps in 2023.

The cup success was a nice distraction from MLS, where things have not been going well for CFM. The Canadians have suffered four straight losses and sit at the bottom of the Eastern Conference table.

The 2026 season has been a struggle up to now, as Montreal has won just five of 25 games and lost 14 times.

Crew Next Up

The Montreal players have the chance to ease the pressure on the interim boss when they take on fellow strugglers Columbus Crew at Saputo Stadium on Saturday night. Crew is currently just two points ahead in 13th.

Columbus is also in bad shape, losing six of its last seven MLS games. Since a 3-0 home victory over Colorado Rapids earlier in the month, the Ohio team has suffered back-to-back defeats to DC United and New York Red Bulls.

There is hardly anything to split the pair in the latest MLS odds, but Monreal will fancy its chances of making home advantage count to end the poor run.

The sides met in Ohio just last month, with goals from Owusu and Noah Streit giving the away team all three points. That remains Impact’s only MLS victory in 14, but can Eullaffroy’s boys see off Crew again?
