Toronto Blue Jays are Eliminated From the Playoffs

It’s official: after getting swept by the Baltimore Orioles in a recent doubleheader, the Toronto Blue Jays are eliminated from playoff contention.

Hard to believe, since last season the club was only three outs away from winning the World Series.

Faltering Down the Stretch 

On Sept. 5, the Blue Jays beat the Kansas City Royals 4-3 to pull into a tie for the last American League Wild Card spot. They were riding high, finally getting over .500 (72-71) and winning their fourth straight game. Then the wheels fell off, and the club faltered down the stretch.

After the win over the Royals, the Blue Jays would go on to lose 11 of their next 15 games. They limped through the home stretch with five losses in six games, and in the doubleheader loss to the Orioles, they scored only two runs in each game.

Blue Jays Simply Not the Same Team 

It is pretty simple, and obvious as well, that this season’s Blue Jays team was not the same as last year’s AL Pennant-winning one. Last season, they ranked first in both hits and team batting average and were the third highest-scoring team in the Majors.

This season, with three games remaining, they rank a legit eighth in team batting average and hits, but second-to-last in runs scored.

Power Outage in Toronto 

The main reason for the lack of runs was the lack of home runs. Last season, the Jays tied for the 11th-most homers, while this season they rank dead last.

In his first season after signing a massive 14-year, $500 million contract, slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who has come under some heat for recent comments about his contract, has only hit nine home runs after averaging 31.8 homers over the previous five seasons.

George Springer only had 15 home runs this season after clubbing 32 in 2025. Last season, Toronto had eight players with double-digit home runs, while this season they had four, with two of those players at just 10.

Pitching Gave the Fans Some Promise 

The pitching staff, hit hard by injuries this season, was the main reason the team was even in the playoff picture in September. They rank a respectable ninth in team ERA and seventh in opponents’ batting average.
