Games Global Enters Alberta iGaming Space

Games Global has joined over 22 regulated operators in Alberta’s fledgling iGaming space. The casino and slots giant waited a couple of months as Alberta’s new licensed regime took hold. It now goes live with a license from the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) commission.  

Games Global goes live with a wealth of top-tier online slots, many of which come from its 2022 acquisition of Microgaming’s back catalog. Games Global also offers a live casino courtesy of OnAir Entertainment.

Games Global Brings the Best Microgaming Progressives

Games Global is one of the largest online casino software companies in the world. It expanded in 2022 by buying Microgaming’s online games and later acquiring Quickfire as well.

While its platform includes top slots like ‘Gold Blitz’, it’s also been rolling out a tranche of new releases. This summer saw the release of ‘12 Masks of Fire: Night Fever’ and a brand-new progressive jackpot network.

Jackpot Madness games feature four prize tiers, plus smaller mystery prizes with a higher hit frequency. Some of these games are expected to feature at Alberta’s newly regulated online casinos.

Alberta Licenses 50+ Developers & Providers

Alberta iGaming went live on July 13 with 22 online casinos and developers launching on Day 1.

Many providers already supplied Albertans with games, though in a gray market. Under AGLC licensing conditions, gray-market operators had until 13 July to cease operations and refund all customers, then had a few more months to go live with the proper license.

The AGLC licenses both online casinos and sportsbooks, with over 60 software developers also now entering the market.

With Pragmatic Play launching on opening day, it was natural to assume that its big rival, Games Global, would follow suit. Amusnet entered the market last month to bolster the province’s online slots offerings.

OnAir Entertainment Provides Live Dealer Action

Games Global is also primed to take advantage of Alberta’s capacity to host live casino games.

The developer has an exclusive live-dealer partner, OnAir Entertainment. OnAir expanded its live casino content last year with the launch of BetMGM Exclusive Roulette and LeoVegas Exclusive Roulette.

BetMGM Casino officially launched in Alberta on 13 July. LeoVegas already enjoys a foothold in the regulated Ontario market. It was gearing up for a 13 July launch before pausing new signups. It then confirmed that it would not join the regulated market after its initial launch date.

Other big hitters to delay the launch include Betway. They will likely wait until the final October deadline for license applications.

Alberta Eyes Up Ontario iGaming Numbers

Alberta has seen a fervent, if cautious, launch of its regulated online gambling market. It’s only the second province, after Ontario, to go live.

Certainly, it will be eyeing up the types of iGaming revenue figures Ontario has seen.

GGR (Gross Gaming Revenue) for online gambling in Ontario was CA$3.2 billion in 2024-25, a 32% year-over-year increase.

Alberta has about one-third of Ontario's population, so the first yearly GGR figures will be down accordingly. Plus, the AGLC has been very keen to wean its gamblers away from unregulated gray-market casinos. Until July this year, Albertans have had to use the PlayAlberta platform as the only state-regulated alternative.
