Play Alberta Sportsbook Review | Is Play Alberta legit?

Written By John Carlo Villaruel , Sports Betting Expert for TheLines.com

There’s currently only one legal sportsbook in the province of Alberta, and it’s called Play Alberta. If you’re in Alberta and looking to place sports legally within the province, then this Play Alberta review is just for you.

That’s because we’ll describe what sports events, betting markets, and betting odds are available at the site. You’ll also discover the site’s eligibility requirements and then walk you through the steps of placing your first bet there. We offer our thoughts on its features and services based on our tests and answer important questions about what you’d get there.

How does Play Alberta work?

Alberta used to be a monopoly market where only government-regulated sites were authorized by provincial laws to offer online gambling services. However, after the passing of Bill 48 in May 2025, the province is expected to launch its regulated market around July 13, 2026. That said, at the time of writing, Play Alberta is the only regulated online sportsbook in Alberta.

So, how does it work? That’s what we are about to talk about.

Sports, markets, and odds available at the Play Alberta sportsbook

The site has exclusive betting partnerships with the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Elks, Edmonton Oilers, and Calgary Stampeders. It’s also affiliated with the Edmonton Stingers and the Calgary Surge, so there are enough local teams for you to bet on.

However, the Play Alberta sportsbook doesn’t strictly focus on football, hockey, and basketball, which are big in Alberta. Unlike what we learned during our FanDuel sportsbook review, the site covers 10+ professional sports, including boxing, MMA, Formula 1, tennis, baseball, rugby, golf, and soccer. We found several niche markets, such as darts, stock car racing, Gaelic Hurling, and water polo. You’d also find multiple esports titles to wager on, such as Valorant, League of Legends, and Call of Duty.

Some of the available betting lines at the site include moneylines, point spreads, Canadian bets, Trixie bets, in-play bets, props, outright bets, and totals. As far as the odds go, they are pretty decent and fairly competitive for the major sports leagues. They are presented in decimal, American, and fractional formats for your convenience. We also like how accommodating the site’s betting limits are. You’d be able to bet as little as $0.10 and as much as $20,000 on a single event.

Using Play Alberta’s sports betting services

To be eligible to place sports bets at Play Alberta, you’d have to be at least 18 years old and physically located within Alberta. You’re also not eligible to sign up to the site if you’re enrolled in an Alcoholic Gaming Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) self-exclusion program. Once you meet these eligibility requirements, take these steps to sign up:

  1. Click on the on-page banners to visit the sportsbook’s official website.

  2. Tap the “Sign Up’ button to the top right of the screen.

  3. Provide your email and password.

  4. Click the “Next” button.

  5. Verify your account by entering the 6-digit verification code the site sends to your email in the box on the registration page.

  6. Hit the “Next” button.

  7. Provide your name, date of birth, residential address, mobile number, occupation, employer, and location. You’d also be required to answer a couple of other personal questions.

  8. Tap the “Submit” button after providing the required details to complete the sign-up process.

  9. Sign back in to your account and make the qualifying deposit.

After signing up, here’s how to place bets:

  1. Click the “Sports” tab at the top of the site’s homepage.

  2. Pick your preferred sports event.

  3. Select your betting market and odds.

  4. Open your bet slip and enter your wager amount.

  5. Review the details of your bet slip.

  6. Click the “Place Bet” button.

Wait for your bet to settle to either withdraw your winnings or repeat the steps above.

What we think about Play Alberta’s sportsbook features

Based on the test we conducted during this Play Alberta sportsbook review, here’s what we think about the site’s sportsbook product:

Bland but very functional website

If looks were all we used to rate Play Alberta’s sportsbook, it wouldn’t rank among our top five sports betting sites in Canada. Unlike the luxurious-looking website we were greeted by during our BetMGM review, Play Alberta’s home page looks basic and could use improvement.

Thankfully, once you get past the site’s looks, its layout is very intuitive and easy to use. You can quickly pick your favourite sports betting events by clicking on the “Favourite” tab at the top of the screen or search for other sports events using the “Search” feature in the same area.

The bookmaker lists all the sports events it covers on the left side of the screen, or you can use the “All” tab to go through them. In the middle of the page is a quick description of all the ongoing and upcoming betting markets, and you could sift through them by clicking either of the “Popular”, “Live”, or “Upcoming” tabs. To the left of the screen is your betslip, and right under it are the available SGP markets.

The site’s footer includes links to different sections of the site, its documents, partners, socials, and payment methods.

We like how fast the page speeds are, as it only takes a couple of seconds for the pages to transition after you’ve clicked a link or tab. That makes it very easy to find and place bets, fund your accounts, or withdraw your winnings. We didn’t find a bet builder feature, though. But the sportsbook sports a cash-out feature that you can use on eligible markets.

You’d have a great mobile experience

If you’re big on mobile sports betting, you’ll definitely enjoy using Play Alberta. That’s because the site has a native app that’s compatible with Android and iOS devices. The app is free to download and is available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

The app works just like the desktop version, and you’d be able to enjoy the same level of functionality when betting on the go. Betting on the top professional sports leagues or executing transactions on the app is just as easy as it is on your PC. The app design looks like the website, so it isn’t exactly eye candy, but it's very intuitive, just like the bet365 app we tested during our bet365 review.

Bettors who don’t have space to download the app can also use the site on the go via their preferred mobile browsers. The site is fully mobile-optimized and easily adjusts to the size of your mobile device’s screen.

The payment options are reputable but limited

At the time of writing, you can only fund your Play Alberta sportsbook account using PayPal, Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, and Interac e-Transfer. The minimum deposit is $5, and you can’t deposit more than $25,000 per day or $100,000 per week. You won’t be required to pay any deposit fees by the bookmaker, but your payment provider might charge you for its services. Deposits are often instant, but if you have issues with a payment method, you can change it. Interestingly, we found a similar payment method structure when we conducted a DraftKings sportsbook review.

You can withdraw your winnings via Interac e-transfer, bank transfers, or PayPal. The minimum amount you can withdraw is $10, but we didn’t find any limits on the maximum amount you can withdraw. Withdrawal transaction times depend on the payment option you use, but note that you’d need additional verification if it’s your first time processing withdrawals at the site.

The average transaction time for bank transfers is 3 to 5 days after the withdrawal has been approved. It takes an average of 2 days to process payments via Interac e-transfer once the withdrawal has been approved, and an average of 30 minutes to process payments via PayPal after the withdrawal has been approved.

The site gets it right with its support options

During our checks for this Play Alberta sportsbook review, we discovered that the site offers its bettors support via live chat, email, and phone. Not many betting sites offer phone support, and we found it quite surprising that a provincial Crown site like PlayAlberta does. What we found even more interesting is that you could speak with a support agent at any time, 7 days a week.

There’s also the live chat support option, where you can chat with agents whenever you need help. It’s not as fast as the phone support option, but the average response time for live chat support is under a minute. You could also reach the support team via email, but it can take up to 48 hours to receive a response. We recommend using email support if you have issues that require lots of details or documents to resolve.

Besides these support options, we also found an extensive FAQs section that covers everything a new bettor needs to know about how to use the sportsbook. Once you’ve signed up to Play Alberta, consider looking up its FAQs section before you start placing bets.

We already mentioned that the site is currently the only regulated sportsbook in Alberta and that it's a provincial Crown site, but we didn’t go into details. Here’s what we meant. The site is government-operated, which is why it’s called a provincial Crown site. It’s also regulated by the AGLC, which is Alberta’s gambling regulatory body. However, the odds and markets available on the site are managed by Sporting Solutions, a third-party provider based in the UK with an office in Edmonton.

The sportsbook uses SSL encryption technology to safeguard your personal and financial data. Its operations also comply with the Alberta Protection of Privacy (POPA) Act, and it uses strict Know Your Customer (KYC) protocols to ascertain the eligibility of its bettors.

We also discovered that the site integrates the AGLC’s Self-Exclusion program and GameSense into its responsible gambling tools suite. Some of the responsible gambling tools available at the site include deposit limits, loss limits, and a reality check feature.

Conclusion – Our Play Alberta sportsbook review offers a lot of information

For Albertans looking to legally place sports bets in the province, it's important to understand how the Play Alberta sportsbook works. The site is currently the only legal betting site in Alberta and employs several security measures to keep its bettors safe. We weren’t particularly impressed by the look of its website, but the sportsbook offers great usability on PC, in its native app, and on its mobile site.

There are 10+ sports to bet on at the site, and you could also place bets on some niche markets and esports titles, too. We didn’t find many payment options for deposits and transactions, but the available ones are reputable and offer relatively fast processing times. There’s also customer support available 24/7 via live chat, email, and phone. Plus, Play Alberta offers a safe and secure online sports betting destination through multiple security measures.

Based on the tests run during this review, we’d recommend the site to new and seasoned Albertan sports bettors. Click the on-page banners to get started at the site if you’d like to get in on the action.
