After Opening +20000, LSU’s Joe Burrow Now Has Same Heisman Odds As Tua Tagovailoa

So that happened fast.

LSU quarterback Joe Burrow is breaking Texas hearts and Geaux Tigers’ records.

Against the Longhorns on Saturday, Burrow threw for 471 yards, the second most in LSU history. The previous week against Georgia Southern, Burrow tied Zach Mettenberger’s LSU record by throwing for five TD passes in a game. Burrow basically did that in a half.

For his sake, hopefully Burrow is only breaking Mettenberger’s passing records and not his arrest records.

Anyway … the Ohio State transfer is shooting up draft boards and Heisman odds.

Burrow = Tua?

Over at FanDuel Sportsbook, Burrow is now priced at +500 to win the Heisman. That’s the same odds as Alabama supernova Tua Tagovailoa. They both trail Randall ‘Pink’ Floyd Trevor Lawrence of Clemson (+300).

At FanDuel, six of the top eight Heisman contenders are either current SEC players or recent transfers (Jalen Hurts and Justin Fields, both SEC traitors).

Most impressively, Burrow has gone from a preseason +8000 Heisman candidate at some books to now second favorite. In just two weeks. Burrow moved to +2000 at FanDuel after his five touchdown performance in the season opener.

Going back to February when the 2019-20 Heisman odds were first released, Burrow was +20000 at the Westgate Superbook in Las Vegas.

LSU isn’t a program that historically pumps out quarterback prospects like their SEC peers. Burrow is treading in uncharted territory.

How the public is betting the Heisman

So far, OU’s Jalen Hurts is generating the biggest share of bets and handle at the books. Burrow is only taking around 1% of action thus far at FanDuel, but his performance against Texas is forcing oddsmakers to take notice.

Rank% Handle% Bets
1Jalen Hurts (33.1%)Jalen Hurts (28.5%)
2Tua Tagovailoa (10.7%)Justin Fields (7.5%)
3Jame Fromm (7.5%)Jake Fromm (7.3%)
4Shea Patterson (4.9%)Sam Ehlinger (6.3%)
5Sam Ehlinger (4.52%)Travis Etienne (6.0%)
6Joe Burrow (1.1%)Joe Burrow (1.5%)

LSU title odds improve as well

When the first batch of college football futures were released in January, LSU sat at +2500 (seventh best overall). They dropped as low as +5000 at FanDuel Sportsbook before the season started in August.

After their strong start and dispatching of Texas, LSU is now priced at +1600 (fifth best, leaping past Michigan and Texas).

The Tigers should continue to roll in Week 3 as they play the Northwestern State Demons. No odds are available on that yet, but a 70-point spread sounds about right.
