Power Golfing: New-look Bryson DeChambeau A New Favorite Among PGA Tour Bettors

Bryson DeChambeau odds Travelers

Bryson DeChambeau returned from the PGA Tour’s near three-month break ranked 13th in the Official World Golf Ranking ahead of the Charles Schwab Challenge. He was the talk of the tournament while finishing in a tie for third in an ultra-competitive field. He then tied for eighth at this past week’s RBC Heritage for his sixth top 10 finish through eight international events in 2020.

DeChambeau now sits 11th in the OWGR ahead of his return to TPC River Highlands this week where he hopes to improve on a T-8 finish in the 2019 Travelers Championship. While he hasn’t won a PGA Tour event since the 2018 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, DeChambeau is playing some of the best golf of his career and bettors are already taking note ahead of 2020’s three major championships.

Only World No. 1 Rory McIlroy (+1100) opened the week of the Travelers Championship with lower betting odds than DeChambeau’s +1200 at FanDuel Sportsbook, despite nine players in the field ranking higher in the OWGR. DeChambeau is also +1200 at DraftKings Sportsbook, where Justin Thomas is the tournament favorite at +1000 and McIlroy is +1100.

What’s changed about Bryson DeChambeau?

Already one of the PGA Tour’s most interesting personalities, The Scientist used his time off to overhaul his appearance and drastically improve his game. McIlroy was left in awe after being paired with DeChambeau in the final round at Colonial Country Club in the Tour’s return to play.

“He hit a couple drives on Sunday that (caddie Harry Diamond) and I just looked at each other, and we’re like, holy [expletive], that was unbelievable,” said McIlroy. “He hit one into the wind on 11. I hit a really good one and probably hit it like 315, 320. He must have flew my ball by 40 yards. He hit it like 370, 375 into the wind. It was crazy. It was nuts. It’s unbelievable.”

DeChambeau’s power exhibition was put on further display at Harbour Town Golf Links. The 26-year-old was asked to move to the very back of the range and drew a crowd of fellow Tour pros after instilling fear to homeowners around the course.

He led the Charles Schwab Challenge field in both Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee and Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green, according to Data Golf. He also took over the Tour lead in Driving Distance at a would-be record-setting 323.8 yards. Those trends continued with field ranks of sixth in SG: T2G and fifth in SG: OTT at Harbour Town.

DeChambeau estimated recently he has added roughly 40 pounds since leaving college in 2015 with half of that weight gain coming in his three months away from competitive golf.

Bryson DeChambeau a new favorite of bettors

DeChambeau ranked third by the betting handle and fourth in total bets at DraftKings Sportsbook to win last week’s RBC Heritage. He drew one bet of $2,000 at +1400 odds where a win would have returned $30,000.

He trailed only Justin Thomas in bet count and received the largest share of the betting handle at FanDuel where he was +1500 to win the tournament outright. What’s making these rankings most interesting is the strength of the past two fields. Both tournaments thus far in the Tour’s return welcomed all of McIlroy, Thomas, Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka, Webb Simpson, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed and Xander Schauffele.

Another top finish is unlikely to do much to quell those expectations. The books were quick to take note of DeChambeau’s improved play and the new infatuation of bettors, leading to his lower odds this week at a course where he has two top 10 finishes in the last two years.

New-look Bryson DeChambeau rising on PGA Tour futures boards

DeChambeau’s impressive return at the Charles Schwab Challenge invoked a $550 bet at +2700 odds at FanDuel to win the 2020 US Open. The wager would return a profit of $14,850 if he were to win his first major at Winged Foot Golf Club in mid-September. The price has not been adjusted, leaving DeChambeau as the eighth favorite.

His odds to win the Masters in mid-November, however, dropped from +2700 to +1600 at FanDuel following the unveiling of his new look and a $300 bet at his old odds. He’s also +1600 to win the PGA Championship in early August as the year’s first major.

DeChambeau opened at +2500 to win the 2020 Masters, according to SportsOddsHistory.com, following a T-29 finish at Augusta National Golf Club last year. That number had risen to +4000 by Jan. 1, following a 2019 season in which his lone win came at the European Tour’s Omega Dubai Desert Classic.

A blistering start to the 2020 calendar year, even amid the interruption of the COVID-19 pandemic, has seen those odds plummet to their current level. It’s unlikely those odds can drop much lower, at least before the PGA Championship, and bettors may now be best to wait until closer to the start of the respective majors.

The best value is coming at the US Open and DeChambeau’s newly-gained power should be best shown off at the 7,264-yard Winged Foot and the trademarked US Open conditions. The US Open is already the only of the four majors where DeChambeau has finished inside the top 20, as he tied for 15th in 2016.
