Open Championship Prop Bets To Make, Miss The Cut
The golf world rocks up to the last and best major of the year this week, the British Open. While it’s the last chance for major glory, there’s also one last opportunity to hit some golfers to make and miss the cut at a major. Open Championship cut prop bets have plenty of value on the board this week, as Royal Troon presents potentially the stiffest test of major season.

2 Open Championship Make The Cut Prop Bets To Consider
Phil Mickelson (), Tiger Woods ()
Let’s just do the two aging wonders of the golf world together. It feels likely that one of these two will make the cut, but I don’t know which. Mickelson competed in one of the best majors ever here in 2016, losing to Henrik Stenson in the process. From a strokes gained perspective, Mickelson’s loss was more impressive than some wins. And yet, he ran into the Swedish gauntlet of Stenson. Phil hasn’t done much of anything on LIV recently, and missed the cut at both Pinehurst and Valhalla. That said, I’m taking a punt on course history with Lefty.
Tiger’s less a course history play than a course fit play. Tiger’s lower ball flight works better for links golf, and his ability to conceive of wacky, slightly ludicrous shots plays well around somewhere like Troon. He’s got a T9 here from 2004. But most of all, Tiger sounds increasingly optimistic about his body. He gained off the tee at both Pinehurst and Valhalla, and if he leaves himself looks from the fairway, he can play the weekend.
At their elevated odds, going 1-for-2 would still turn a profit.

4 Open CHampionship Miss The Cut Prop Bets To Consider
Rory McIlroy (+450)
A T4 at the Scottish Open has allayed some fears about the state of Rory’s game. That said, the Pinehurst collapse still looms large. Rory is under immense scrutiny after again failing to win his first major since 2014. Even in Scotland, Rory was bailed out by gaining nearly 6 strokes around the green. He lost with his irons, which will be key at Troon. The last time he was the story around an Open like he will be this week, a Thursday 79 sunk him. It’s unlikely he’ll do that badly this week, but then again, it’s unlikely there’s a Friday 65 out there to be had around Troon either.
This is a narrative play above all else. Pinehurst showed that he’s still capable of cracking when the pressure intensifies, and that bad shots run together with him. If he starts +2 through five I don’t have faith he can save himself right now. At his price, it’s worth a shot.
Max Homa (+110)
Homa made the cut on the number in Scotland, but the underlying metrics remain a problem. He’s lost strokes or at best broken even off the tee in eight straight events, and with the putter in five straight. He’s lost with his irons in three of the last five, including losing over 6 strokes in Scotland. He missed the cut at the U.S. Open and at Colonial, and came T61 at the no-cut Travelers. His game is a mess.
His only saving grace is the state of his around-the-green game, which will be key. He’s only lost strokes around the green once since April, but relying too heavily on that here will be bad. Troon’s small greens and Homa’s weak iron play will mean he has to scramble a lot. If his status on the weekend comes down to his ability to hit a good proportion of 6-10 foot par saves, count me out.
Jordan Spieth (+160)
Lost strokes on approach in Scotland last week, and outside of a Saturday 63 at the John Deere, the last time he looked even close to right was April. He missed the cut at Memorial and Scotland, he came T63 at the elevated, no-cut Travelers, and is generally a disaster right now. He’s gained the third most strokes/round in Open Championships since 2016, which is slightly concerning. But his game is so far gone that there’s just nothing that says he’s making the weekend.
Bobby MacIntyre (+188)
As TheLines’ resident Ginger, I feel safe in saying no proud Scotsman who just won his National Open will be in any way prepared to take on the challenge of Troon. It’s in play that Bobby Mac will still be hungover by the time he tees off on Thursday. There’s no way he’s going to be able to do anything this week.
