Brisnet Speed Figure Analysis For 2023 Preakness Stakes

Preakness Brisnet Speed Figures

Brisnet speed figures are a powerful handicapping tool for horse racing, specifically the Preakness Stakes. Winners of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes have a strong history of posting 100 Brisnet speed scores. Mage, who won the Run for the Roses at 16-1 odds, had a career-high 101 Brisnet heading into it and posted a 103 in the Derby itself. Let’s dive into Brisnet speed figures for the field.

The 2023 Preakness Stakes runs Saturday, May 20 from Pimlico Race Track in Baltimore. Post time is approximately 5:44 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on NBC, NBC Sports App, and Peacock.

Note: First Mission (5-2 morning line Preakness Stakes odds) scratched Friday morning from the race. Seven horses will now run in the 2023 Preakness.

Brisnet speed figures are a measure of how fast a horse runs a given race. Like Beyer speed figures, they’re transferrable stats that account for track condition, competition, and other variables to create a useful look at each race performance. They’re a long-proven indicator of future race success, particularly in Triple Crown legs.

The top two scores belong to Mage, where he posted a 103 in the Kentucky Derby and a 101 in a MSW (maiden special weight) race. Each of the last three Preakness winners and eight of the last 10 posted a 100+ Brisnet speed figure in the race itself. Two of the last three and four of the last 10 victors posted a 105 or better.

Previously, First Mission tied the top spot of speed scores at 103. However, the Brad Cox-trained colt scratched Friday morning.

National Treasure, Chase the Chaos, and Coffeewithchris all trend negatively with their speed scores. Conversely, Red Route One, Perform, and Blazing Sevens‘ speed scores have all generally improved race over race leading into May 20.

Mage is the lone horse to race in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, the first instance since 1948 which only one Derby runner also ran in the follow up. He looks to become the first Triple Crown victor since Justify in 2018.

While Mage owns the top spots and three of the top four, National Treasure has a serious record of top speed scores. Bob Baffert’s Preakness entry has four of the top eight Brisnet speed figures of the field, but he’s failed to reach his career-best 101 score set back in October.

Red Route One is the lone exception to the top eight speed scores. He posted a respectable 98 in the Bath House Row stakes, albeit against lesser competition. Blazing Sevens has the next-highest score at 95, tied with Mage’s lowest recorded score and Red Route One’s second-best score.

Given Mage’s dominance in the speed scores, it’s unsurprising that he opened as a 8-5 favorite on the morning line odds. The best sportsbooks also offer Mage at 8-5, a number that can and likely will change leading up to post.
