The final two games in last week’s Braves vs. Mets series at Truist Park were postponed because of the wet conditions from Hurricane Helene. While both teams find themselves percentage points ahead of the Diamondbacks in the NL wild-card race, multiple scenarios exist.
The Mets and Braves own the tiebreaker over Arizona, each winning their season series. For the Diamondbacks to reach the playoffs, one of them must sweep. Arizona won’t advance if the Mets and Braves split the doubleheader, with all three teams finishing 89-73.
Whether the Braves or Mets will rest their starters after winning the first game is unknown. Remember that the first of a three-game series begins on Tuesday, as Atlanta and/or New York will play Milwaukee and/or San Diego in the wild-card round.
Atlanta rookie Spencer Schwellenbach will start Game 1 against Tyler Megill. The right-handed Schwellenbach boasts a 0.64 ERA, 2.17 FIP, 0.43 WHIP, and 30.6% strikeout rate in two starts against New York this season.
As of this publication, FanDuel Sportsbook has the Braves and Mets set at -1600 and -520, respectively, to clinch a spot in the playoffs. The Diamondbacks, after winning the NL last season, are +220 Yes/-320 No to clinch a wild-card berth.
Braves vs. Mets Tiebreaker Scenarios
- If the Braves and Mets split the series, fifth-seeded Atlanta will face the Padres in a best-of-three wild-card series in San Diego. The Mets would travel to Milwaukee after flying from Milwaukee to Atlanta on Sunday and returning to Milwaukee on Tuesday.
- If the Mets win both games, they’ll take on the Padres as the fifth seed. The sixth-seeded Diamondbacks would face the Brewers in a rematch of last year’s wild-card series.
- If the Braves sweep, Atlanta will earn the No. 5 seed and travel to San Diego. The Diamondbacks will take on the Brewers.
