Tournament Notes
Over at BetMGM Sportsbook, the Boilermakers are set at +150 to win their first league tournament championship since 2009. That’s equivalent for a 40.0% implied probability. Purdue is led by 7-foot-4, king-sized Zach Edey, the soon-to-be Wooden Award winner.
The Boilermakers split their final eight regular season games, and they showcased their true colors during that stretch. Despite that, they’re still getting too much credit in the betting market. Their in-state rival Hoosiers (+500) are trending in the opposite direction, winning 11 of their last 15 contests. That included their first sweep of Purdue since 2013.
Trayce Jackson-Davis, Indiana’s lone First Team All-American since Victor Oladipo and Cody Zeller in that same campaign, tallies 20.5 points, 11.0 boards, 3.9 assists and 2.8 blocks per game. As if that wasn’t enough, his assist rate in Big Ten play is higher than Yogi Ferrell’s figure when the Hoosiers won the 2015-16 conference regular season title.
Even with veteran point guard Xavier Johnson done for the season, Mike Woodson’s team is presented with an ideal path to advance to at least the semifinals — especially if it faces Northwestern for a third time. Mind you, both of their meetings in 2023 were decided by one possession. I’m already invested in the Hoosiers come mid-March, and I’ll likely add another wager on them if the bracket breaks right before Friday.
Outside of a high-variance, 3-point shooting unit in Penn State (+2500), I’d stay away from this market otherwise.
