NFL Week 1 odds breakdown
While the Chiefs’ odds have fluctuated between -2.5 and the key number of -3 all offseason, Kansas City has accumulated the most bets by handle and ticket count in Week 1. The reigning champs kick off the campaign at Arrowhead Stadium versus the Ravens, a rematch of last season’s AFC Championship game.
Kansas City’s point spread has generated 70% of the handle and 58% of the bets. These numbers are early indicators that more influential money has sided with the home favorite, yet there shouldn’t be any bigger deductions from this data set that influence your wagers. Albeit intriguing, “sharp” and “public” action often differ in every sportsbook.
Despite acquiring four-time Pro Bowl tailback Derrick Henry, Baltimore lost more key pieces in the offseason, including offensive linemen Morgan Moses (Jets) and Kevin Zeitler (Lions), defensive coordinator-turned-head coach Mike Macdonald (Seahawks), linebacker Patrick Queen (Steelers), and safety Geno Stone (Bengals).

AFC Endearment Continues
As noted, “Gang Green” has garnered the second-most bets by handle and the third-most by ticket count. New York heads to San Francisco to face the 49ers, which fell to the Chiefs in overtime in Super Bowl 58. The Jets’ odds are listed as dogs, with Rodgers seemingly fully recovered from his Achilles injury that cost him almost the entire 2023 season.
Bettors’ interest in New York and the points are eerily identical to Kansas City thus far. The Jets have manufactured 68% of the handle and 57% of the bets.
The Steelers’ odds are next in line, tallying the third-most bets by handle for NFL Week 1 odds. There is quarterback uncertainty between newcomers Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, but I agree with this sentiment. Pittsburgh’s defensive line could wreak havoc versus fellow free-agent signee Kirk Cousins. Like Rodgers, Cousins is returning from an Achilles tear.
Moreover, Atlanta lacks a substantial pass rush with Calais Campbell and Bud Dupree leaving town. The newly acquired Matthew Judon, Arnold Ebiketie, James Smith-Williams, and Lorenzo Carter team up to fill the void. Judon accrued 28 sacks from 2022-23 but suffered a serious biceps injury in Week 4 of last year, ending his season. There’s no guarantee Judon will return to form.
I haven’t fully handicapped the odds for NFL Week 1, but the Falcons could be overvalued. Regarding the line, T.J. Watt and Co. are nabbing 83% of the handle and 62% of the bets.
