Kentucky Wildcats Vs. Troy Trojans Matchup
Despite Kentucky’s quarterfinals exit in the SEC Championship, the NCAA selection committee saw the Wildcats as worthy of a No. 3 seed. According to the full listing of the 68 tournament teams, the Wildcats ranked second-lowest among three-seeds, behind Texas Tech and Iowa State and ahead of Wisconsin. According to KenPom rankings, Kentucky is the worst three-seed in the field.
However, that doesn’t stop Mark Pope’s young squad from being favored by double digits over 14-seed Troy. What UK lacks defensively — it finished as the SEC’s 15th-ranked scoring defense — it more than makes up for with its talent on offense and pace. Guard Otega Oweh leads the way with 16.2 points per game, but six total Wildcats average 10+. This lineup is exceptionally deep for UK.
Sun Belt Player of the Year Tayton Conerway leads Troy in nearly every prominent stat. The 6-foot-3 guard is an efficient scorer, shooting over 47% from the floor, but he offers little by way of the 3-point shot. Remove Conerway from the equation, and the Trojans are left with little offensive pushback.
Last season, Kentucky fell to No. 14 seed Oakland. Led by folk hero Jack Gohlke, Oakland beat Kentucky’s poor defense with a barrage of 3-pointers. Troy simply doesn’t match that capability, regardless of Kentucky’s defensive efforts. Troy faced three opponents from Power Conferences this year and went 0-3, losing every game by 15+. While coached soundly and boasting a formidable defense, the Trojans don’t have the talent or depth to bounce Kentucky this time around.
