Penn State Eyes Expanded College Football Playoff Field
Five-star quarterback Drew Allar returns alongside a revamped receiving corps and a new, exciting offensive play-caller. Penn State hired Kansas OC Andy Kotelnicki to call the offensive, known for his creative run schemes in Lawrence. The most exciting transfer portal addition is former Ohio State receiver Julian Fleming. Fleming is expected to be a top target for Allar after hauling in 963 yards and seven touchdowns in four seasons in Columbus.
Kotelnicki has an embarrassment of riches both in the backfield and along the offensive line. Star running back Nicholas Singleton pairs with Kaytron Allen for one of the Big Ten’s best one-two punches in the backfield.
But Penn State makes its money defensively. Adbul Carter appears to be the Nittany Lions’ next first-round NFL draft pick at edge rusher. Linebacker Tony Rojas is a breakout name to watch, and Cam Miller is likely an All-Big Ten candidate, should he meet expectations.
Thanks to the conference axing divisions, Penn State no longer has to shoulder annual matchups with Ohio State and Michigan. The Buckeyes grace the schedule in 2024, but not the Wolverines. An opening non-conference matchup at regional rival West Virginia makes for an interesting barometer for Penn State football in 2024. Currently, they have -145 odds to make the College Football Playoff, an implied 54.6% chance. Penn State is also lined for 9.5 regular season wins, thanks to a largely winnable slate.
