Maryland faces Colorado State In Round of 32
Part of a drama-filled early Friday window, Colorado State pulled off a 78-70 win over Memphis. While the 12-seed pulled off the “upset,” the Rams were favored on the point spread over a depleted Tigers roster. Guard Kyan Evans paced the winning effort with 23 points. On the other side, Maryland smooshed Grand Canyon, 81-49. Of those 49 allowed points, 23 of them came from a single player as the Terps flexed their defensive muscles and depth.
Colorado State managed to avoid becoming the latest Mountain West dud. However, MWC teams seeded fifth or worse are now 2-31 in their last 33 NCAA Tournament games. Maryland entered the tournament ranked sixth in KenPom’s defensive ratings and 20th in eFG% against (46.6%). Colorado State, perhaps a touch underseeded, counters with the 25th-best eFG rate in the country (55.7%).
Watch for a clash of styles as Colorado State runs a slow, methodical pace (284th in adjusted tempo) while Maryland likes to get out and run (59th).
Maryland has a big size advantage and the ability to push the pace to apply pressure. On paper, it appears the Terps will advance to their first Sweet 16 since 2016 and end Colorado State’s 10-game winning streak and, thus, its season.
