Houston Vs. Gonzaga Round of 32 Preview

Neither team broke a sweat against its Round 1 foe. Houston blew past a hapless SIU Edwardsville team, 78-40, while Gonzaga obliterated Georgia, 89-68. Both teams handily covered the spread, even Houston, which found itself nearly a 30-point favorite.

Gonzaga is generally seen as a seriously under-seeded team. Finishing the season 25-8, the Bulldogs received a No. 8 seed from the committee. Houston, a top seed, has by far the worst draw of the No. 1 seeds in this tournament. For this matchup, we get a classic unstoppable force versus an immovable object. Gonzaga finished second in scoring (86.6 points per game) and seventh in KenPom’s offensive rating. Houston ranks second in scoring defense (58.5 points allowed per game) and second in KenPom’s defensive rating.

Guard Khalif Battle paced Gonzaga with 24 in the Round 1 win, and three other Bulldogs scored at least 13. It’s the latest of a season-long balanced effort; five Bulldogs averaged 10+ points per game, including leading scorer Graham Ike (13 in the win).

But they face a physical team in Houston. The Cougs smothered SIUE, holding it to 30.6% from the floor and just 2 of 24 from three. Only Duke forced a worse eFG% from opponents this year than Houston (44.6%). In its last three outings — which included Big 12 Tournament games — Houston held opponents to a paltry 39.5% eFG.

Though the offensive attack for Gonzaga has been guard-focused all year, look for the Bulldogs to try their luck inside with a slight height advantage.
