Before the 49ers walloped the Jets on Monday Night Football, the big news pregame was 49ers star running back Christian McCaffrey being inactive allowing back-up Jordan Mason to take a lead role. This allowed bettors who had locked in bets on Mason props before the CMC news to cash in on odds far better than what they adjusted to after McCaffrey was ruled out. However, bet365 Sportsbook was accused on social media Monday night of not paying out Mason prop bets at the prices the sportsbook accepted when the bets were made.

This is also not the first time bet365 has been accused of unfair bet grading practices, with regulators in New Jersey previously cracking down on the UK-based sportsbook that now operates in the United States.

bet365 Monday Night Football Bet Grading Uproar

Matt Williams, a contributor at VSiN, The Athletic, and NBC Sports tweeted out in the first half of the Jets at 49ers game Monday night that bet365 changed the odds of his Jordan Mason wagers, despite saying he placed the bets before Christian McCaffrey was announced as inactive. The tweet had been seen by more than 371,000 people, as of Tuesday morning.

“So… bet365 is just changing odds after they get caught in a poor position following an injury?” Williams tweeted. “These odds were out wayyyy before the injury occurred.”

The screenshot from bet365 that Williams shared showed the sportsbook claiming “incorrect odds” as the reason for changing the payout. Most sportsbook house rules allow for operators to void or change the price of a bet if the odds posted are an obvious error; however, a player’s role being elevated due to a surprise starter being inactive does not typically fall into this house rule.

“We have identified that this selection was placed at incorrect odds and as such, in accordance with our rules, will be settled at the revised odds of -5000,” the bet365 message to Williams stated. “Please accept our apology for any inconvenience caused.”

Williams had bet Over 13.5 rushing yards for Jordan Mason. He finished with 147 rushing yards on 28 carries.

UPDATE

Williams posted on X Tuesday morning that bet365 changed his Jordan Mason bet back to the original odds, paying out at -110 instead of -5000.

New Jersey Regulators Previously Punished Bet365 for Changing Odds

In August, bet365 was ordered to refund more than $500,000 to sportsbook users who won bets but were paid less. The company changed the odds when making the payouts, New Jersey regulators said.

The NJ Division of Gaming Enforcement ordered a refund of more than $519,000 to 199 customers.

Like Williams during Monday Night Football, the company told regulators that “obvious error” was the reason they changed the odds.

“These types of multiple and serious violations cannot be tolerated in the New Jersey gaming regulatory system,” Mary Jo Flaherty, interim director of the enforcement division, wrote in a July 22 letter to bet365. “No further such violations relating to the unilateral voiding of wagers will be tolerated.”

The company did not contest the order, according to the Associated Press.

The Challenge of holding Sportsbooks accountable

New Jersey regulators held bet365 accountable in recent months and could do so again after Monday Night Football. But that may not help bettors who experience this type of unfair grading practice in other states, as sportsbooks answer to different regulatory bodies in each state they operate in.

As a bettor, your best course of action is to always first try to settle the dispute directly with the sportsbook. If you are unsatisfied, you can always file a complaint with state regulators where you placed the bet.
