But the interesting part with this line is that, despite being the top-ranked team, Houston hasn’t really blown anyone out yet. The Cougars beat Lehigh by 18 and Towson by 17 — both solid wins, but nowhere near the 30-point cushion oddsmakers are giving them against Oakland.
Oakland has actually been one of the more battle-tested mid-majors early this year. They’ve already faced two ranked opponents, getting crushed by Michigan but playing Purdue surprisingly tough, losing by only ten in a game that stayed competitive most of the way. That effort against Purdue shows they can hang around with elite teams when they hit shots and rebound well enough to limit second-chance points.
Houston’s defense will make life difficult, but their slower tempo tends to keep scores a bit lower, and that makes a 30-point spread hard to clear unless they dominate every phase. Oakland’s experience and shooting give them a real chance to stay inside the number. The Cougars should win comfortably, but the data leans toward Oakland covering.
