The Colts are home favorites, and the game carries a -point over/under. Implied team totals make the expected final score: Colts 22, Steelers 20. That means we should expect two to three touchdowns from the Steelers and the Colts.
The Colts are looking for a bounce-back week after suffering a debilitating 34-14 defeat at the hands of Jake Browning and the Cincinnati Bengals last Sunday. Deadlocked with the Steelers at 7-6, this matchup will have significant implications in the AFC Wildcard hunt, while the Colts remain one game out of first place in the AFC South.
The offensive ceiling between two backup quarterbacks is low in this game. However, this vaunted Steelers defense has begun to look more vulnerable over the last two weeks, surrendering 45 total points against Arizona and New England’s mediocre offenses. With star pass rusher TJ Watt playing at less than 100%, we should still expect to see a tightly contested matchup from this pair of fringe playoff contenders.
Indianapolis Colts ATTD Scorer Bets
Colts RB Zack Moss ()
With Jonathan Taylor ruled out this Sunday, expect Zack Moss to assume the bell cow role on this Colts’ offense, which has, for better or worse, displayed a stubborn commitment to establishing the run. While the efficiency hasn’t quite been there for Moss over the last two weeks without Taylor, the volume certainly has, as he is averaging 20 touches per game as the Colts’ starter.
A deserving favorite to find the end zone in this game, I still like Moss’s odds of scoring, given the high expected volume.
Colts WR Michael Pittman ()
The USC product continues to separate himself as the go-to alpha in the Colts passing game. Against a stout Pittsburgh defensive front with no signs of a return for Indianapolis’ star RB, Jonathan Taylor, expect this Colts offense to force the ball into the hands of its top playmaker, Michael Pittman.
Reeling in 11+ targets in four consecutive contests, Pittman should continue to see a heavy concentration of targets in a winnable matchup against Steelers’ rookie corner, Joey Porter Jr. Managing just 48 total rushing yards against Cincinnati last week, the game script sets up well for the Colts to funnel more targets to their top receiver.
Colts TE Mo-Alie Cox ()
In contrast to Zack Moss’ volume-based case to score, I’m also drawn to the quality of targets Cox sees inside the red zone at much longer odds. Cox was the only Colts receiver to reel in a touchdown in last week’s matchup against the Bengals – his second of the season – and the former college basketball player has long established a role for himself as a red zone target in this Colts offense.
There’s no guarantee Cox will see any targets this game, but if he does, it’s fair to expect them to come in the end zone. That’s enough to pull me in at odds this long.
