Bermuda Championship odds golf 2020 Will Zalatoris

While the majority of top PGA pros take the week off with the rescheduled 2020 Masters Tournament just a few weeks away, other Tour players head Southampton, Bermuda for the second Bermuda Championship.

This includes defending champion Brendon Todd – who shot 24-under par last year for a four stroke win. Todd has since moved up to No. 41 in the Official World Golf Rankings. It also includes 24-year-old PGA Tour rookie Will Zalatoris, who is the favorite to win at +1100 at FanDuel Sportsbook.

For the first time since the PGA Tour returned in June from the global health crisis, fans will be allowed to attend a golf event – with up to 500 general admission spectators on-site per day. Other changes to the 2020 event include 500 FedExCup points awarded to the winner, a $1-million increased purse to $4 million total, a field-size expansion from 120 to 132, and the winner qualifying for the 2021 Masters Tournament.

Notable golfers in the Bermuda Championship

The Bermuda field includes rising young players worth watching as Zalatoris and Justin Suh will get some wagering support after both finished top-10 in the recent Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas. Zalatoris has finished top-10 in 3-of-4 PGA Tour starts including the US Open.

Former major champions playing at Port Royal Golf Club include Stewart Cink, Jason Dufner, Padraig Harrington and Danny Willett. Both Harrington and Dufner competed on the course when it hosted the Grand Slam of Golf event for major champions from 2009-2014.

Players who finished Top-10 in last year’s inaugural Bermuda Championship and are returning include:

  • Brendon Todd (1)
  • Aaron Wise (T3)
  • Brian Gay (T3)
  • Hank Lebioda
  • Fabian Gomez (7)
  • Ryan Amour (T8)
  • Wes Roach (T8)
  • David Hearn (T8)
  • Russell Knox (T11)
  • Shawn Stefani (T11)
  • Denny McCarthy (T15)
  • Kramer Hickok (T15)

Todd did not earn a single World Ranking point in either 2017 or 2018. Entering last year’s Bermuda Championship, he had not had a top-10 finish on the PGA Tour in 1,579 days. He won the Bermuda Championship at odds of 80/1, and then incredibly won his next event at the Mayakoba Golf Classic.

The island of Bermuda sits off the North Carolina coast, and the Robert Trent Jones design is an oceanside course with a stunning, short layout. Port Royal is a fully public golf course and Bermuda’s golf crown jewel. The course was renovated in 2009 by Robert Rulewich as part of a $16 million project to draw a world class tournament, which it did with the Grand Slam event and now the PGA Tour.

The PGA pros will score with ease, but there is an abundance of fairway bunkers to navigate off the tees. Landing areas are pinched in spots and the driver is not always the club of choice on the Par 4s as players club down more often. Elevation changes and wind conditions are the defense along the coast, although the opening seven holes give the appearance of a tropical inland golf course as players hit shots through lush low points guarded by trees. From there, the course takes on a visually stunning appearance where ball striking and shorter approach play are key as players handle the wind off the ocean.
