As noted earlier, Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan and Preakness victor Seize the Grey will compete. But neither is atop the board to win the Belmont. Instead, Sierra Leone, finishing a nose behind Mystik Dan at the Derby, is the 9-5 morning-line favorite for this race.
The three-year-old colt closed 5-1, good for the second-best odds, before taking off in the Kentucky Derby.
Per the Daily Racing Form, Flavien Prat, named the jockey for Sierra Leone, has been cleared to ride in the Belmont Stakes despite a three-day suspension by the Santa Anita stewards. Prat crossed over in the G2 Hollywood Gold Cup on May 27, lacking enough clearance at the departure of the starting gate. This action triggered interference for Reincarnate, the eventual runner-up in the race. Subsanador, whom Prat was riding, finished fourth.
The 2024 Belmont Stakes purse is worth $2 million. It’s an increase of $500,000 from last year.
