Past Performances of Belmont Stakes Horses

1. Tapit Shoes (20-1)

Certainly nothing wrong with his effort in the Bath House Stakes for $200,000 in April. Led throughout the home stretch until being nipped on the wire by Red Route One. Might find himself in a favorable speed position with Il Miracolo early and that could improve his performance by a couple lengths.

2. Tapit Trice (3-1)

Bettors can bank on him running late. They need to know if he can get placement early. Essentially broke behind the field in the 20-horse Kentucky Derby and rallied for an overlooked seventh. Starting slow out of the gates has been a consistent pattern.

This is half the field. His break could be twice as good and the expectation of forward placement gives him betting respect. Certainly in the picture. Notched a 99 Beyer Speed Figure in the Blue Grass prior to the Derby and conditions favor him running back to that.

3. Arcangelo (8-1)

Rising star. Son of Breeders’ Cup champion Arrogate has been running very well. Has been guided throughout by jockey Javier Castellano, who rode Mage to victory in the 2023 Kentucky Derby. Won the Peter Pan at this track and carries the hope of extending himself to the new distance. Odds shorter than one might expect for a horse that hasn’t been at this level.

Bettors like his performance over the host track. His 1 1/8 time is comparable to Forte, albeit at one turn. He goes two turns for the first time. Runs with passion. Is going to be very good. Is that time now?

4. National Treasure (5-1)

The Preakness winner figures to be on a stalking plane and should take over the lead somewhere around the halfway point in this race. If he basks in the same dawdling fractions that helped him in the Preakness, he will be a big threat.

Bob Baffert’s horse hitting his stride after a rallying fourth in the Santa Anita Derby and a gut-check triumph over a game Blazing Sevens in the Preakness. Gained a 98 Beyer speed figure that day, one of the best in this race. If anyone steals the race, it should be him.

5. Il Miracolo (30-1)

The life of the party. He could be the best of the early speed and at least make others strategize about placing their horses closer to the initial pace. Game for about half of the Florida Derby at 70-1 and then nowhere to be seen. Likely to be overrun, but may keep the race honest.

6. Forte (5-2)

This would be a reasonable closing price on him, if it stays. Is he rested or rusty? He was full out to nip Mage with a thunderous Florida Derby rally on April 1. Scratched from the Kentucky Derby and Preakness with a foot injury. Maybe the rest helped.

When he was off four months between winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and the Fountain of Youth prep, he romped and was fresh at 1-2 betting odds. Doesn’t have to be on the lead. Stalking, two-to-three lengths off the pace has been an ideal pattern for him.

7. Hit Show (10-1)

In retrospect, that was a pretty good Kentucky Derby run to finish fifth. He made a bid at 24-1 and was right there at the top of the stretch before being overrun by Angel of Empire. On the flip side, it’s hard to see how he will improve at this distance. The blazing fast Derby pace set the table for him, but he was better suited for 1 1/16 miles, not 1 1/4. Now it’s a demanding 1 1/2 miles. Regardless of where he finishes here, keep an eye on him wherever he runs after this. He’ll be bet-worthy,

8. Angel of Empire (7-2)

Bettors will love these odds, and his ranking Beyer Speed Figure of 104 tops in the field. He got that at the Kentucky Derby, where he was a rallying third. Needed too many things to break right in the Derby, and they didn’t. He was checked on an initial outside move in the backstretch and then forced wide. Mage got better positioning and won.

Better positioning might improve his racing luck and provide perhaps a three-length improvement in this race. If he likes the distance, that might be enough.

9. Red Route One (15-1)

Perhaps the sentimental favorite in many quarters. Always makes a bold move from another zip code. If you ever wished to have seen famed late runner Zenyatta but could not, here is the modern-day chance. He spots the field 10-15 lengths and comes late.

Ever since his slop-rallying second in the Rebel Stakes, he’s been viewed as an ideal Belmont horse. The longer it goes, the better for him. Is that true? We find out Saturday. On the flip side, he seems to be leveling off.

Pace Considerations

Il Miracolo figures to break well, with National Treasure gaining a nice stalking spot and Tapit Shoes inheriting a forward position from the rail. Look for Forte to be stalking about three lengths off. Angel of Empire often makes his move from half a dozen or so lengths out.

How I’m Betting 2023 Belmont Stakes Odds

The sobering reality is that none of the horses have gone this distance. So we’re all speculating. I will take one chalk angle and one mid-pack contender angle.

The Chalk Angle

Forte has been my top horse in this circuit since he beat favored Cave Rock in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. He showed terrific heart to win the Florida Derby in a race that looked like it would get away from him. I’m taking him on the win line and coupling with Angel of Empire’s 104 Beyer in the exacta box. Both should make strong runs, as should Tapit Trice and National Treasure. Their odds don’t encourage a spread bet, however, because you might just get your money back and you can make a good argument for all of them.

Little separates them in terms of Beyers. How they look on the track will be important.

Exacta Box: 6,8

The Longshot Angle

Red Route One is a wildcard, albeit a sentimental one. I don’t see the 1 (Tapit Shoes), the 5 (Il Miracolo) and the 7 (Hit Show) as put in the best spot to win. Arcangelo (3) is a curiosity.

I will bet Red Route One in a couple $0.10 superfectas. Have to put him first and second with five others for $12, because it paid me $419 in the Rebel Stakes. Yes, he finished second to an 18-1 shot in Confidence Game that day and this won’t pay in that territory, but I have been curious to see how he’ll do at 1 1/2 miles. I am willing to invest $12 to find out.

This is nothing more than a  “he doesn’t owe me anything” bet. You can probably play with as many combinations as you’d like with the group below find something that makes sense. Good luck finding your angle  and plugging it in.
