Euro 2024 Odds: Belgium vs. Ukraine, Romania vs. Slovakia In Group E Dead Heat Wednesday

As we continue handicapping Euro 2024 odds, it’s time to take a look at Group E. This is the tightest of all the groups heading into the final matches, with Belgium, Romania, Slovakia, and Ukraine all knotted at three points. It appears three of the four will advance to the Euros Knockout Stage, but Ukraine enters today in last place by goal differential tiebreaker. But everyone is live to advance. Tiebreakers currently have Romania and Belgium at the top of the table. Whoever can summon a big performance will assure themselves of advancing. A draw may be enough, but a win assures a berth to the Round of 16.
Kickoff is Wednesday at 12 p.m. ET with TV coverage on FOX and FS1 in the United States.

Scenarios To Advance To Knockout Stage
Belgium fought off a slow start and looked a bit better in their 2-0 win over Romania. They have a strong +2.51 mark in Euro expected goals, one of the better numbers in the tournament. The finishing hasn’t always been the cleanest, and they’ve lost a handful of goals to VAR, specifically from Romelu Lukaku, who continues a frustrating tournament.
Jeremy Doku has been a terror on the wing for the Belgians, and Kevin de Bruyne has contributed his usual quality to the build-up. The attack should be in a decent spot against a Ukraine team that has conceded four times, although xGoals looks upon them a bit more kindly.
The big question will revolve around tactics. How aggressively do the Belgians want to play? A draw would likely see them through, but a win gets them the benefit of facing a third-place side to begin knockouts.
Ukraine has no such questions. Because they got buried 3-0 by Romania to open the group, they likely need a win here. It’s a harsh situation, considering they sit well ahead of both Slovakia and Romania in xGoals, but it can’t be helped now. They must press forward and play for three points.
A draw might still do it, so long as a victor emerges from Romania vs. Slovakia. But they can’t count on it, and unfortunately for them, a draw is the most likely outcome in that game according to the markets (50% chance).

DF Andrei Burca | DF David Hancko |
MF Marius Marin | MF Ondrej Duda |

MF Valentin Mihaila | FW Lukas Haraslin |

Scenarios To Advance To Knockout Stage
Romania finds itself in the opposite situation of Ukraine. Because they booked a large win to open groups, they have a good standing in any likely tiebreaker. Both goal difference and goals scored would likely be in their favor in the group, and they’d be in solid shape in third-place tiebreakers as well.
Nicolae Stanciu and Valentin Mihaila have provided some quality attacking play. However, the team might look to play a more defensive-minded strategy early on in hopes of preserving at least a point with a draw.
The markets appear to like Slovakia a bit more, which is interesting because xGoals is even less impressed with them than Romania. They were quite lucky to beat Belgium, though, and they’re on slightly shakier tiebreaker ground.
If Belgium beats Ukraine, it increases the need for Slovakia to earn a point here. Remember that they lost to Ukraine, which means they’ll drop a direct tiebreaker. They currently sit ahead of Ukraine because of the multiway tiebreak, which would go away at that point.
The bottom line is this game features two teams of similar quality, and each team is more afraid of conceding than it is excited about scoring. That incentivizes careful play. Don’t be surprised to see another 0-0 draw, similar to how Group C finished up.
