Juan Carlos Blanco Expertise

Let’s dive in to Juan’s areas of expertise:

NFL

I’ve been an avid NFL fan since 1980 and have played fantasy football since 1997. I consider the league my strongest area of expertise, having written about it from a standard journalistic perspective, and a daily fantasy sports or sports betting angle since 2015.

MLB

My baseball fandom predates my NFL fandom, with my earliest vivid MLB memory being the 1975 World Series. I’ve been writing about MLB (and, during COVID, Asian leagues such as the CPBL, KBO, and NPB) since 2015. I still actively cover MLB from a sports betting perspective.

NBA

I’ve followed the NBA since the early 1980s and cover the sport for multiple outlets each season. I’ve written about the league from a standard journalistic perspective while also penning articles on season-long and daily fantasy basketball and NBA betting since 2015.

CFL

I’ve been aware of the CFL since the 1980s, but I began following and covering it professionally during the 2016 season. I’ve written about the league from a standard journalistic perspective, and through daily fantasy and sports betting coverage ever since.

FAQ

Why did you decide to become a sports journalist?
My first college degree, earned in 1992, was an Associate’s degree in Communications/Journalism. Although I ultimately earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, I never lost interest in writing, and I engaged in it regularly as part of my duties at a marketing company where I worked for about two decades. When that company downsized considerably, I returned to my journalism roots in 2015 and have gradually carved out a full-time career in the industry.
How do you research and verify the information in your articles?
Most of my articles cover daily fantasy sports or sports betting picks, so I use a variety of sports-metrics sites, such as Pro Football Reference and Team Rankings, for my research.
How do you stay up to date with sports and leagues you cover?
For the NFL, I watch as many games as I can, am a faithful Red Zone viewer, and read plenty of news each week. With daily sports like MLB and NBA, watching nightly is challenging because of work responsibilities, but I consistently analyze box scores and read the latest news every day.
Do you have any direct experience in sports (playing, coaching, or analytics)?
Outside of playing little league baseball for a handful of years in my youth, my other direct sports experience came from informal pick-up baseball, football, and basketball games throughout my teens and 20s. I also practiced martial arts (Shotokan Karate) in my late 30s and early 40s.
