As far as predictions, the odds give Austria an implied probability of about 50% to win this game in regular time, with Turkey winning and a draw making up the other 50%.

To Advance Odds

Bettors will also find “to advance” or “to qualify” markets. These are bets on which team will move forward in the tournament, regardless of when the game is won. They may win in extra time or penalty shootout, in which case the three-way markets only pay out a draw.

While shootouts generally favor the underdog — as opposed to open play favoring the favorite — we saw on Monday that isn’t always the case. Portugal quickly stymied the Slovenians to win in the minimum of three shots.

Match Preview

The attack has been the strong suit for both of these teams thus far.

After dropping a heartbreaking 1-0 decision to France, Austria dropped three goals on back-to-back opponents Poland and Netherlands. xGoals is a bit less impressed with their build-up, crediting them with only 3.95, but the finishing has certainly been there.

Christoph Baumgartner, Konrad Laimer, and especially Marcel Sabitzer have excelled in creating chances. Sabitzer put together a superb effort in the 3-2 win over the Dutch that vaulted Austria to the top of the group.

Meanwhile, much of Turkey’s build-up can be credited to brilliant play from 19-year-old attacking midfielder Arda Guler. The Real Madrid phenom looks the part so far, netting once and showcasing plenty of feel in navigating through the defense around the box.

With both teams looking a bit leaky on defense — both having more than 5 xGs allowed — we could see some offense here. Offense that’s been in short supply in many of these recent matches.

Turkey’s team has taken a bit of a hit. The foul-plagued match against the Czechs saw the Turks accumulate a staggering 11 yellow cards. Two players notched their seconds of groups, so they’ll miss a couple of regular starters in this match.

Ultimately, this is a matchup between an Austrian team that won a rather difficult group against a Turkish team that finished second in one of the weaker groups. One can understand why Austria is favored. If they can contain Guler, they’ll be in good shape to advance.
