Tournament Notes
As previously noted, Ritchie McKay’s bunch is priced at -210 to advance to March Madness despite being the No. 2 seed. That’s equivalent to a 67.74% implied probability. Liberty hasn’t appeared in the NCAA tournament since the 2020-21 campaign, falling to the Cade Cunningham-led Oklahoma State Pokes in the first round. It also failed to cover the closing spread (+7.5).
Next up is No. 1 seed Kennesaw State, which sits directly behind Liberty in regards to adjusted defensive efficiency in ASUN play (per KenPom). Amir Abdur-Rahim’s Owls pulled off the outright upset at Liberty in their lone regular season meeting on Feb. 16. Chris Youngblood, one of the conference’s premier two-way guards, led the way with 22 points.
Nevertheless, the higher seed hosts every game after the first round in the ASUN tournament format. Advanced metrics favor the Flames as well. Not only are does their pack-line defense rank No. 38 nationally, but they also boast a top-60 adjusted offensive efficiency. The 5-foot-9 Darius McGhee is a top-tier point guard, generating the second-highest shot rate nationally, with March Madness experience.
While the official conference website provides a bracket, it’s of only some use. The format is a little odd, calling for reseeding in the semifinals. That means four pods effectively comprise the first two rounds of the tournament. Here’s the makeup of said pods:
- Kennesaw State, Queens, FGCU
- Stetson, Lipscomb
- Liberty, North Florida, Bellarmine
- Eastern Kentucky, North Alabama
Kennesaw State, Stetson, Lipscomb, Liberty, Eastern Kentucky, and North Alabama all have first-round byes. The Liberty Flames and Kennesaw State Owls, respectively, will play the winner of the other teams’ matchups while the other Flames, Hatters, Colonels, and Lions all have their games set. We’ve also set up a central hub for the rest of the conference tournament schedule.
