Tournament Notes

Per the odds table above, the best price in the market on the Flyers is currently (courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook). That’s equivalent to a 41.67% implied probability. Dayton fell short of the 2022 NCAA Tournament, but it was Malachi Smith’s season-ending ankle injury in the A-10 semifinals that held it back from accomplishing more.

Anthony Grant’s team wasn’t immune to its fair share of wounds this season, either. Not only did Smith’s ankle injuries cost him 15 additional games in his sophomore campaign, but Kobe Elvis — his backcourt mate — also missed a slew of those contests with a knee issue.

The Flyers’ misfortune doesn’t stop there. They rank No. 328 in KenPom’s “luck” factor. This category showcases the deviation in winning percentage, regarding their actual record and their expected record. It utilizes the correlated gaussian method.

What goes into this rating? Close-game variance. Keep in mind, six of Dayton’s 11 losses have come by two possessions or fewer. That included two of their last three games to wrap up the regular season, falling to both Saint Louis and George Mason. You can make the case that the Flyers struggled to finish tightly-contested matchups, but that can also be attributed to the injury bug. With Smith and Elvis back to their normal workload, the Flyers’ price tag is certainly warranted.

On top of that, Dayton boasts a top-50 adjusted defensive efficiency. The Flyers’ frontcourt duo of DaRon Holmes and Toumani Camara is a major reason why, helping allow the 20th-lowest 2-point field goal percentage (45.5%) nationally.

The only other teams that bettors should consider are the VCU Rams and Saint Louis Billikens. Mike Rhoades’ crew owns the A-10’s top defensive rating in conference play. Adrian Baldwin, Jr. leads the way at both ends, but VCU’s overall half-court offense is a bit too stagnant to back — especially when its defense isn’t forcing turnovers. Meanwhile, Saint Louis’ cohesion rivals the likes of Dayton’s core, yet its own defense isn’t nearly as trustworthy as the Rams nor Flyers.
