The First Year Of Online Sportsbooks In Arizona

Arizona sports betting apps hit the ground running when it launched last year, with its first month accumulating $291.2 million in betting handle and $31.2 million in sports betting revenue. The state collected $23 million in taxes during the first month, according to reports released by the Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG).

Through the course of the 2021 NFL season, sportsbooks in Arizona saw more than $2.7 billion in betting handle, $226.3 million in sports betting revenue, and $22.6 million allocated to the state in taxes. Online sportsbooks contributed to more than 90% of the total sports betting market during that stretch.

Arizona initially set the record for the fastest market to see $1 billion in bets, taking only 82 days, to do so. This record would go on to be broken by New York.

Online betting is the primary way locals wager throughout the year. The most recent revenue report released by the ADG shows that $290,511,532.33 was bet on sports in July 2022 with $288,262,422.67 coming from mobile betting apps.

Arizona Online Sportsbooks Expected To Continue Its Dominance

Arizona also became one of the first markets to embrace in-stadium sportsbooks, currently hosting a BetMGM operation at State Farm Stadium, a Caesars Sportsbook at Chase Field, and a FanDuel Sportsbook at the Footprint Center.

The Grand Canyon State has set this trend which has spread to other markets like Washington D.C. and the forthcoming Ohio betting market. In-stadium sportsbooks are expected to become the future of betting, but mobile sportsbooks in Arizona will likely always dominate.

There are nearly two dozen active Arizona online sportsbooks that are accessible anytime anywhere. Arizona bettors have clearly shown an attraction to online sports betting. Should Arizona continue the pattern of other sports betting markets, the next year will be another one filled with success. Arizona online sportsbooks can potentially eclipse the success found in its first full year of activity.
