Tournament Notes
As expected, the Catamounts are a hefty -175 favorite to claim consecutive NCAA tournament berths. That’s good for a 63.64% implied probability. Although they fell short against Arkansas in the Round of 64 last season, they provided their against-the-spread backers (+5) with a positive net result.
Don’t expect much from Vermont in the dance this time around, yet it’s still fairly priced in a bottom-10 conference. John Becker’s motion structure delivered a top-100 adjusted offensive efficiency (per KenPom). Bellarmine transfer Dylan Penn (replacing Ben Shungu) and fellow guard Finn Sullivan, both averaging 12+ points per game, help pace its attack.
No. 2 seed UMass Lowell certainly provides a stylistic contrast to the Catamounts, as the River Hawks utilize a top-100 adjusted tempo. That’s a key to any upset bid, considering the league’s top seed ranks bottom 55 in that department.
Everrett Hammond & Co. already tallied a 15-point victory against them on Jan. 11, too. However, Sullivan didn’t suit up for that contest — on top of the fact that Vermont was manufacturing the 168th-rated offense at the time.
Look for Becker’s unit to extend its 12-game winning streak — the third-longest run in the nation. Keep in mind, the Catamounts won’t leave Roy L. Patrick Memorial Gymnasium, their home arena in Burlington, Vt., for as long as their America East tournament odds remain alive.
