ALCS Preview

The Guardians are facing a bad matchup here. They’re below average in barrel rate, and they tend more towards soft contact than others. They’ve managed to succeed despite that due to the vagaries of Progressive Field. The Guardians play in the fifth-most pitcher-friendly park in baseball. The problem is, they’re now at baseball’s most fraudulent of stadiums for 4 games. More crucially, they’re against a Yankees lineup that can hit for power.

The Guardians rotation behind Tanner Bibee, as their choice to go full bullpen game in Game 5 reminds. They need to get better performance from their starters, who failed to go 5 full innings in any game in the NLDS. In a best of 7 series with less rest, they won’t be able to rely on their bullpen as much. This could be a clear sign of weakness for the Guardians.

Damn Yankees?

On the other side, the Yankees will be hoping Gerrit Cole can replicate his 7 innings of 1 run baseball in Game 4 to win the series. If he can go twice, or even potentially three times, in this series, the Yankees will be in great shape. Chris Rodon will need to step up, having given up 4 runs and a 1.57 WHIP in Game 2 of the ALDS.

On the hitting front, the Yankees are stacked, with Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, and Giancarlo Stanton headlining. The Yankees were 4th in Slugging in 2024’s regular season, which is a good team construct for the short porch of Yankees Stadium. Whether they will come up short on fly balls that would get out in New York could be important when in Cleveland.

The biggest thing will be the team’s relative ability to survive suboptimal pitching. The Yankees Game 2 ALCS starter had an ERA that nearly started with a 4. The Guardians don’t seem to trust any pitcher to go 5 innings. Bullpen management will decide this matchup. That doesn’t seem to bode well for Yankees fans, given they seem to not be fond of Aaron Boone. That said, Luke Weaver excelled in high-leverage spots in the ALDS.

Best of luck betting ALCS odds!
