Raiders Odds

After replacing Gardner Minshew with over a quarter left in the Raiders’ Week 5 loss to the Broncos, Aidan O’Connell will start in Sunday’s game against the Steelers. While Pittsburgh has risen from -2.5 on the look-ahead line to -3, this movement wasn’t a product of the impending quarterback news. Let’s assess the odds for the Raiders vs. Steelers, including O’Connell’s resume and the latest on Davante Adams.

Market Evaluation

Look-ahead lines are often adjusted based on the ensuing week’s results. Although Pittsburgh fell to Dallas in the waning seconds, Las Vegas was obliterated as a three-point underdog in the Mile High City. Even though the Raiders outgained the Broncos by a smidge in yards per play (YPP), the spread was adjusted to the key number of a field goal.

When examining the turnover battle, it’s unsurprising why Denver won by two scores. Minshew tallied three interceptions, including a pick-six in the second quarter that flipped the script. While takeaways aren’t necessarily predictive, Pittsburgh is tied for the league’s fourth-best turnover differential.

For reference, O’Connell’s turnover-worthy play rate (2.6%) in 2023 was only a hair lower than Minshew’s this season.

While O’Connell could invigorate Las Vegas’ offense, the lack of explosive playmakers hampers his upside. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that Adams, the six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver who hasn’t played since Week 3 with a hamstring injury and has requested a trade, isn’t expected to suit up in Week 6.

Since the start of last season, O’Connell ranks No. 47 in the EPA+CPOE composite. Bettors may find that the Steelers have outperformed their 3-2 record, but betting on the Raiders sans Adams is risky.
