Why Did The Jets Move On From Rodgers?

Aaron Glenn has entered the building and takes over as Jets coach. Adding Rodgers was a win-now move, and Glenn presumably has some leash to build for the future.

Glenn probably concluded that Rodgers’ level of play no longer merits the headaches inherent in dealing with him. Rodgers was an MVP candidate in two of his last three healthy seasons, but in 2024, he finished 22nd in the EPA+CPOE composite.

The Jets can now move on with a rebuild and no longer worry about keeping Rodgers happy by bringing in all of his friends and bending the organization to his will.

Will Aaron Rodgers Retire?

Rodgers told gathered reporters, “It’s been a long career,” before the 2024 finale. Might that be a hint that Rodgers is moving on to life after football?

The longtime Packers has hinted at possible retirement, most famously during his final years in Green Bay. After seemingly every campaign, MVPs and all, Rodgers would say he needed to figure out his future. Each time, he returned, including when he forced a move to the Jets.

Given how poorly that’s gone, it’s reasonable to wonder if this is it.

At the same time, competitors like Rodgers rarely choose to go out as sad as a 5-12 season that was over halfway through.

Steelers, Raiders Top Candidates To Land Rodgers

No team is expected to have a busier offseason than the Pittsburgh Steelers. Near the top of Cooper Kupp odds and Deebo Samuel odds, Pittsburgh has a vacancy at QB in addition to a need at WR.

The team isn’t expected to return the awkward Justin Fields-Russell Wilson pairing. Both players will become unrestricted free agents.

However, it’s fair to wonder whether Rodgers is even an upgrade on Wilson. Presumably, Rodgers will ask for more than the vet minimum the team paid Wilson.

Would Tom Brady be interested in bringing his former rival into Las Vegas? New coach Pete Carroll probably wants to win sooner than later, considering he’s turning 74 this season. Rodgers might be a solid stopgap for a team that has repeatedly failed to draft a quarterback.

Further down the board, the only team that would seem to make much sense is New Orleans. New coach Kellen Moore immediately voiced support for Derek Carr. However, teams say a lot of things. If the Saints think they can get Rodgers and he’s an upgrade, they’ll likely try to do it. At 35-1, don’t be surprised if they are in the mix.

March 5 Update: Giants The Odds-On Favorites Now

As the quarterback dominoes have begun to fall, the market for Aaron Rodgers odds has changed considerably.

The Matthew Stafford contract took the Rams, once among the favorites, out of the running for Rodgers. Sam Darnold has hit the market, indicating the Vikings will likely stay the original course and build around J.J. McCarthy. The Steelers are reportedly zeroing in on bringing back Justin Fields.

That has brought the New York Giants into focus. With a coach/GM combo that likely needs to win now to retain their jobs and a roster lacking playable QB options, the Giants make sense for Rodgers. He wouldn’t have to learn his way around a new home stadium.

New York has become the odds-on favorite to sign the mercurial legend. They’ll even have the chance to pair him with old friend Davante Adams, hitting the market after he, too, received his walking papers from the Jets.
