Why I Predict Aaron rai will Win the Wyndham championship

It is no secret that the formula for winning the Wyndham Championship boils down to a simple combination accuracy and birdie-making. Accuracy is important two-fold at Sedgefield Country Club, as the course offers little-to-no advantage for driving distance, instead rewarding precise approach shots from the fairway in the concentrated range of 100-175 yards. These are Aaron’s Rai’s two greatest skillsets, ranking top-5 in both Fairways Gained and SG: Approach over a 36 and 50-round look back window.

In terms of birdie-making, Aaron Rai is no stranger to scoring in bunches, becoming one of the most consistent First Round Leader threats on the PGA TOUR over the last two years. He ranks top-5 in Round 1 Scoring Average leading into this week, but has shown to turn a corner in sustaining that hot form over the course of a full tournament recently, posting three top-10 finishes over his last four starts.

This profile of accurate birdie-makers has driven one of the more linear trends amongst Wyndham Championship winners. The last 10 winners of the Wyndham Championship – Glover, Kim, Herman, Poston, Snedeker, Stenson, Kim, Love III, Villegas, Reed – all share the same traits in common. Each is an approach specialist who atones for a lack of distance by playing from the fairways. In the 2024 Wyndham Championship field, no player exemplifies those traits better than Aaron Rai.

Aaron Rai odds are hovering around 35-1 to 40-1 to start the week.

Lucas Glover 2.0

Lucas Glover laid out a very compelling formula for Wyndham Championship contenders last year. In 2023, Glover entered the final tournament of the PGA TOUR season as a consistent ball-striker who began to peak at the right time due to a putter adjustment.

Last season, Lucas Glover was a fairway-finding specialist, gaining on the field in Driving Accuracy in all but two starts. In the month leading up to the Wyndham Championship, Glover posted impressive finishes of T4 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic on Donald Ross’ Detroit Golf Club, followed by a T6 at the John Deere Classic and 5th at the Barbasol Championship. With new lofty expectations, he balked at the 3M Open with a disappointing Missed Cut the week before the Wyndham Championship. With Glover, an equipment change to the broomstick putter was the missing link, as he finally was able to pay off his world-class ball-striking by converting birdie opportunities into actual birdies on the card.

In 2024, Aaron Rai’s end-of-summer rise is eerily similar. Like Glover, Rai has lived out of the fairways week-to-week this season, gaining to the field in Driving Accuracy in all but two starts. Over the last month of the season, Rai has kicked it into high gear with finishes of T2 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, T7 at the John Deere Classic, and T4 at the Genesis Scottish Open. With new lofty expectations heading into The Open at Royal Troon, the Englishman was humbled by a T75 finish. Now, he’s had a couple extra weeks to collect himself for one final push into the FedEx Cup playoffs. Like Glover, Rai was been a model of consistency with his Driver and Irons, but has been derailed from higher finishes due to his shortcomings on the greens. In this latest hot streak that features five top-20s over his last six starts, however, Rai has credited changes to his putting as the catalyst, working with new putting coach John Graham.

Course History is paramount at Sedgefield Country Club, but Lucas Glover proved last year it is not the end-all-be-all either. While Rai lacks a strong result in two prior appearances at this event, his improved putting and ball-striking form should spell a much better result in 2024.

Statistically, Rai ranks top 10 in this field in:

  • Comp Course history
  • SG: Total (L36)
  • Driving Accuracy
  • Strokes Gained: Approach
  • Greens In Regulation
  • Birdies or Better Gained

Rai ranks No. 1 overall in my model this week. All of these reasons are why I’m giving Aaron Rai the best opportunity to with the Wyndham Championship this week.
