Tournament Notes
Per the odds table above, Houston is set at odds to win its third consecutive league tournament championship. That’s equivalent to a whopping 75.61% implied probability. Unsurprisingly, the Cougars deliver the sixth-rated adjusted defensive efficiency (per KenPom).
Although they’ve made consecutive trips to the Elite Eight, this edition of Houston is constructed a tad bit differently. Most importantly, it doesn’t possess an superb defensive wing, like Taze Moore in 2021-2022. Terrance Arceneaux, a 6-foot-5 wing with his fair share of ballhawk-like tendencies, just isn’t ready for that type of a workload yet.
Therefore, Moore’s absence is showcased in the Cougars’ defensive metrics. They own the 24th-rated unit, at that end of the floor, against AAC competition. That ranking is nothing to scoff at, but it certainly accounts for their slight decline.
With that said, Memphis (), possessing the second-shortest AAC tournament odds, is the only one of Houston’s foes worth any consideration. Led by Kendric Davis, arguably the premier point guard across D-I, the Tigers boast a top-45 rating at both sides of the court. They nearly upset the Cougars on Sunday, with Davis manufacturing a team-high 26 points in the losing effort.
Penny Hardaway’s unit theoretically has an easier path to Sunday, avoiding Cincinnati or Temple in the semifinals. The Tigers may have a NCAA tournament run in them, too, thanks to their stifling, around-the-clock ball pressure. Memphis is to make the Final Four.
