The San Francisco 49ers are back on the practice field as training camps around the NFL get underway, but the team will be without its head coach in a full capacity for the foreseeable future.

Kyle Shanahan will only be participating in camp on a limited basis after suffering significant injuries in a car accident earlier this month.

According to reports, Shanahan sustained a broken nose, three broken ribs, a broken hand and a severe concussion in the crash, which required more than 40 stitches to his face.

And injuries like that obviously come with a recovery period where being on the practice field throughout the intensity of training camp is going to be difficult.

His responsibilities will certainly be limited until he’s able to recover.

With one of the league’s best rosters and high expectations entering the season, that’s going to require the rest of San Francisco’s coaching staff, along with the veteran leaders on the roster, to step up and help fill the void while Shanahan works his way back to full strength.

Training camp is all about building chemistry, installing schemes and creating momentum heading into the regular season.

So while it’s certainly positive news that Shanahan, all things considered, was fortunate to survive the crash and is expected to make a full recovery, the reality is that recovery is still going to take time.

The good news for the 49ers is that Shanahan is back around the team and involved in the day-to-day operations, even if it isn’t at his normal level.

That continuity should help minimize the impact of his absence on the practice field.

Still, this will be a situation worth monitoring over the coming weeks as Shanahan continues progressing.

For now, he’ll be back in the building, but it appears it’ll be in a much more limited capacity early on in training camp as he continues recovering from one of the more frightening off-field stories of the NFL offseason.
