Sam Burns, Doc Redman Among Names That Could Surprise At 3M Open

3M Open odds Sam Burns Doc Redman

Last year a shootout ensued at the TPC Twin Cities. Matthew Wolff‘s eagle on the 72nd hole propelled him to victory with a 21-under par total. Wolff won at odds of 125-1 in Las Vegas, but a number of other big longshots finished Top 10 and a total of 52 golfers shot double-digits under par. There were 1,976 birdies made in last year’s 3M event; the most of any course on Tour in 2019. Scoring average was  69.45 on the Par 71 TPC Twin Cities.

Wolff ranked No. 1 in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green and No. 1 in Par Breakers in last year’s 3M Open.

Here are some mid-priced players that could find their way towards the first page of the leaderboard in another shootout at this year’s 3M Open.

Harris English (+3500 at DraftKings Sportsbook): The top-ranked player in this field in SG: Tee-to-Green and solid overall Off-the-Tee stats. Missed the cut in last year’s 3M Open, but had four Top 6 finishes late last year and is on an improving path with two Top 20 finishes in his recent two events. English is up to No. 29 in FedExCup standings.

Russell Henley (+3500 at DraftKings): Also missed the cut here last year, but is moving up the stats sheets with improved play and strong metrics. In his past 24 rounds, Henley ranks ranks No. 1 in SG: Tee-to-Green and Approach, No. 2 in SG: Total and No. 4 in SG: ball striking. Only putting is holding him back from more Top 10 finishes, but putting was not a category of significance at last year’s 3M Open.

Erik Van Rooyen (+3500 at FanDuel): A big hitter gaining more traction, and the South African has played TPC Twin Cities many times while at the University of Minnesota. Up to No. 43 in the World Golf Rankings and on a special sponsors exemption invitation to play this week. Led a WGC event in Par 4 scoring average this year, and should make plenty of birdies this week. Motivated to play well.

Sam Burns (+4500 at DraftKings): Tied for seventh in last year’s 3M Open. Another young gun and huge hitter who has finished Top 30 in his three recent events since Tour hiatus. His driver as a big weapon has him ranked Top 15 in SG: Off-the-Tee.

Doc Redman (+5000 at BetMGM): Missed the cut here last year but has solid stats models including Top 15 in SG: Approach after falling from last week’s cut. A solid tee-to-green game and three Top 21 finishes in three previous tournaments for 22-year-old.

Others: Vegas (+6600), Hoffman (+7500), Gordon (+7500), Howell (+8500), Wiesberger (+9000)., Piercy (+12000), Wise (+12500), Zhang (+12500), Ernst (+30000).

3M Open odds

TheLines‘ PGA Tour power rankings has a number of new names cracking the Top 20 as the lightest field of players since the PGA’s return from hiatus in mid-June shoot for more birdies at the TPC Twin Cities. The scheduling of events determines where many of the top-ranked golfers play, and this week’s event provides many players with a breather ahead of the PGA Championship, which begins Aug. 6 at Harding Park in San Francisco.

Defending PGA Championship winner Brooks Koepka needs FedExCup points, and to get his game in shape, so he’s playing this week. Kopeka’s odds to win the 3M Open have shifted up slightly this week from the opener at FanDuel Sportsbook and BetMGM, where his odds are best for bettors at +1600.

Dustin Johnson missed the cut last week with his worst tournament as a pro, shooting 80-80. Johnson did win the Travelers Championship at value odds of +2800 toward the end of June, and his odds have held steady between +1000 to +1200 for the 3M Open.

Tony Finau (+1400) opened lower than expected this week at +1200. Finau tops the 3M field in Par Breakers. Finau was near the top of the leaderboard in last week’s event at The Memorial at Muirfield before faltering badly on Sunday in tough conditions.

Tommy Fleetwood is now offered at best odds of +1700 to win at DraftKings after opening +1800. Paul Casey rounds out the Top 5 players in this week’s betting market – holding steady at BetMGM at +2200 to win the 3M Open. Wolff (+2500) is next with the sharpest move across the board of the leading contenders. Wolff opened +3300 at DraftKings, +2900 at FanDuel and +2800 at BetMGM.
