After 82 regular season games and three rounds of the postseason, the NHL season has reached its zenith as the Stanley Cup Finals roll on in the Silver State. The Carolina Hurricanes are on the road as they travel to take on the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals series Saturday night and we have you covered with our Hurricanes vs. Golden Knights prediction.

In Game 1 of the series, Vegas rallied to pick up a 5-4 victory, drawing first blood last Tuesday. Carolina rallied in Game 2, picking up a 4-3 overtime victory last Thursday night to square the series. Vegas won a wild Game 3, prevailing 5-4 in double overtime last Saturday night at home. Carolina responded again, winning Game 4 5-3 on the road Tuesday to square things up. The Hurricanes followed that up with a 4-2 win at home in Game 5 Thursday night. Will Carolina close things out and win the Stanley Cup or will Vegas prevail, forcing a Game 7? Let’s break down this Hurricanes vs. Golden Knights matchup.

Hurricanes Seek First Cup Since 2006

Carolina became the first team to win consecutive games in this series as they took Game 5 at home Thursday night. The Hurricanes now have two cracks to win one game for their first Stanley Cup title since 2006. Current coach Rod Brind’Amour was the Hurricanes’ captain back in 2006.

In Game 5, Carolina shrugged off an early deficit to rally to win Game 5, giving them a 3-2 series advantage. The Hurricanes lost the shot battle 7-5 in the opening period but skated off with the game tied at one at the first intermission. After giving up the opening goal of the period, Jordan Staal tied the game with his eighth playoff goal at 11:46. Nikolaj Ehlers and Seth Jarvis drew the assists on the goal. In the second period, Carolina held a 10-5 shot edge but outscored Vegas 2-0 to lead 3-1 after 40 minutes of play. Andrei Svechnikov gave the Hurricanes a 2-1 lead with his fifth of the playoffs, on the power p\ay, at 11:58. Shayne Gostisbehere and Ehlers drew the assists. Sebastian Aho made it 3-1 with his fifth of the postseason at 17:51. Sean Walker and Jordan Martinook assisted on the goal.

In the third period, Carolina lost the shot battle 13-9 with both teams scoring once. That secured the win for the Hurricanes. Svechnikov tallied his second of the night and sixth of the playoffs, on the power play, at 11:08. Ehlers and Gostisbehere drew the assists on that marker. The Hurricanes gave up one later but held on for the win. Brandon Bussi made 23 saves for Carolina, who lost the shot battle by a 25-24 margin, in the win. Bussi (2-1-0, 2.18 GAA, .908 save percentage) projects as the starting goaltender here.

Golden Knights Look to Force Game 7

Vegas led the series 2-1 but back-to-back losses put them on the brink of elimination as they take the ice here at home. The Golden Knights have struggled in their own end of the ice all series and another dud performance could end their season.

In Game 5, Vegas took the lead early but couldn’t maintain their momentum as they dropped a pivotal contest. The Golden Knights owned a 7-5 advantage in shots in the opening period but skated off with the game tied at one after 20 minutes. Pavel Dorofeyev opened the scoring with his 11th goal of the playoffs, on the power play, at 6:52. Jack Eichel and Tomas Hertl drew the assists. They gave up the equalizer later in the period. In the second period, Vegas lost the shot battle 10-5 and on the scoreboard by a 2-0 margin to trail 3-1 at the second intermission.

The third period saw the Golden Knights with a 13-9 shot edge with both teams scoring once. That left them on the short end of the scoreboard as time expired. After giving up a goal to trail 4-1, Dorofeyev scored his second of the night and 12th of the playoffs at 13:49 to make it 4-2. Shea Theodore and Eichel drew the assists on the marker. Carter Hart made 20 saves for the Golden Knights, who owned a 25-24 advantage in shots, in the loss. Hart (14-7, 2.57 GAA, .907 save percentage) is slated to get the start in goal again here.

Hurricanes vs. Golden Knights Prediction

We’ve seen Hart completely come undone in this series, allowing at least four goals in all five Stanley Cup Finals game. That marks the first time that has happened in history. The Golden Knights, for better or worse, are going to live or die with him in net it seems. Carolina made the bold move to go to Bussi in Game 4 after he came on in relief in Game 3. He has delivered two straight victories and stabilized the Hurricanes’ goaltending situation. Carolina has all the momentum in the world and Vegas seems drained. Take the Hurricanes as they win the Stanley Cup.

Our Prediction: Hurricanes ML (FanDuel, -115)
